Every year my venue has a costume contest. I find that if I keep myself completely seperate from it I'm better off. The top three winners are picked by applause only. Like any contest there is only one top winner, so there is always more losers than winners which causes more unhappy people than happy. People always complain after they should have won.

I go out on the porch and watch from the window, so I can stay completely nuetral. The owner usually does the contest. Being I'm in a small venue there are a lot of regualrs who I know and to make sure I don't get blaimed for favortism I stay far away from the judging.

How do you all handle costume contests?

We usually dress up for halloween, but we don't have a CONTEST. We give out small gifts to ALL singers that are in costumes, but that's about it. If the VENUE wants to give a prize for the best costume, then I would be sure to point out that the venue is having the CONTEST. To me, you can't win with a contest, because for every winner, there are ten losers. Some of them may be HARD LOSERS.

My bar makes a big deal out of a costume contest every year, then every year the owner ends up picking some sort of charity case to receive the $$$. It really sucks, since he advertises it as a $250.00 costume contest, and the last few years people that were not even in costume won the $$$.

For example, last year one of our day-time bartenders was pregnant with twins. She came to the bar and was not even in costume, and the owner declared her the winner.

I don't mind him giving people like that the $$, but I have plenty of ethical issues about how he has me advertise the costume contest for about a month, then there really isn't a costume contest. Makes me look bad.

I'll let you know how it turns out this year, but I already see it coming!!

The costume contest idea is a good idea because it does bring in more people and more people do dress up. People complain after but it is short lived. I find that as long as I stay out of the judging people blaim the owner, not me and I don't lose customers over it.

Ours is judged by applause. For the most part the best costumes usually win. The top three are usually all really good, so then it comes down to popularity. But of course most people who dress up think they should win no matter how fair it is.

One yr I suggested he give gift certificates to the bar instead of cash. I thought it was a good idea until he put a time limited on them for a month. Aaarg! I heard more complaints about that than anything.
