I like both, but after 2 years of playing with my toy I still don't really know much more. The new mackie has nice new features like FX and USB, but I'm wondering if the old mackie has just got better internals, like mike pres. Opinions? Since the new ones don't come out for a while, maybe I should just wait until next year.

Lon, chime it please! TY - jim

Actually everything I've read in the mags and such (as opposed to marketing hype) is that Mackie has improved the quality of their boards and in particular the pre-amp stages. I like the new ProFX line from what I've seen so far. Between the two you posted here, I think it's far and away the better of the two.

But then opinions are like (_|_) so do with mine what you choose ;)

My original 1202 was flawless!

Since then I've had 4 others and still have 2. I've had/have probs with everyone since the first. Mostly noisy pots or switches.

Out of the 2 I would probably lean more towards the PROFX for it has built in effects, the USB capability & faders as opposed to the rotary knobs.
The VLZ actually has better pre-amps (IMO) on the mic channels though but then you lose the effects (not a big deal if you have an outboard) & uses the rotary knobs over actual faders.

I find the biggest problem with all the new mixer is that the connections are on the top instead of on the back. That would make my rack look ugly.

The 1202 has always been that format, nothing new since it's inception. Mainly it was because of the small format, it's designed for a tabletop & not so much a rackmount. I actually prefer the connections on top for my shows if I have to do a quick cord change, I don't have to get into the back of the rack and can change out quickly. As far as being ugly, it's a mixer? It's going to have cords to it. Just neaten them up and be done.
