What would y'all recommend for an active 3-way speaker that is relatively small, like somewhere around a couple feet tall and 50 pounds or so?

Im happy with my Mackie SRM450 2 way speakers. Probably good enoug for most venues holding less than 150 people if you have a pair.

Also ok for outdoors for gatherings <100 people or so. (loud enough to get the event shut down by the police with little distortion).

They weigh about 35 pounds each.

According to reputation they tend to burn out if you run them too hot and too long, but that will happen to any system that is being used in a venue that needs a larger system.

I don't think you'll have much success finding a 3-way powered cabinet that only weighs 50 lbs. All of the powered 3-ways I'm aware of weigh over 100 lbs. Think about it, you're talking about a cabinet that contains 3 speakers (often times a pair of big ol' 15" woofers) and three amplifiers. Plus anything with a cabinet that big is going to be made of birch or something with similar strength so that will add extra weight.

So my answer is I can't recommend something that meets your requirements.

What about a couple small 2 way cabinets & a small sub?

I don't think a 3-way active speaker that weight below 50 lb exist. If anyone found one I am interested.
Like Lonnie said; a normal 2-way active with a sub is a good alternative.

Two SM350s and a 15-inch sub. The 350s are very compact and sound great, and I can easily hoist them up on the stands myself. (Can't with the 450s) I used that combination all summer long at an outdoor venue, (and still had issues of not wanting to play it too loudly); we use the 350s and the sub in a medium sized indoor venue, and again, they are more than capable of really great sound with very high clarity. The 450s and a sub will do a huge auditorium easily. Therming out was a problem with the previous versions but the new versions of the 450 do NOT therm out.
