After experiencing another show recently that previously came with a guarantee of a high caliber, I am once again disappointed. There appears to be a major disconnect between what I hear about shows and the actual product. I'm not sure if it is a matter of perhaps these shows being newer and, as my husband suggested, these people just LOVE karaoke, went to a store and said, "I want to start a karaoke business and I need some karaoke equipment" (Oh lord, what a mistake to do that) and now they're trying to run shows based on their love of singing alone. OR they thought to themselves, "Mmmhhhh, quick way to make some bucks", went out and spent the minimum, threw some music on a harddrive, and found the warmest body they could that could speak into a microphone...

So I have decided, I will have NO EXPECTATION at all when I go to a new show - that the baseline is probably the person running the show has little or no experience about mixing sound, about highs, mids, lows, about EQ'ing, about effects, about volume (singer, karaoke music, bumper music), about ANYTHING AT ALL and I will NOT be disappointed.

I know Lonnie will prove me wrong this Friday night and I look forward to experiencing a great karaoke show with some forum pals at his show. :D :clapper:

If you ever visit the UK
I guarantee you...

I wont have the US country or some other songs so bring a disk.

You would have a fantastic experience and leave feeling good.
I don't say that lightly.
I have worked hard to get it so.

I don't love karaoke. I don't even sing.
I can put on a show.

Sorry I can't oblige Letitrip.
I am 200 miles from London.

Yeah Jerry I know I never did find a good Karaoke spot while I was over there. Actually kinda surprised me, I figured with all the tourists floating around the Soho area where our office is that there'd be some kinda karaoke happening. Oh well, I did enough sight seeing and other things to keep me busy. BTW, I love the underground system in London, very well setup and easy to navigate.

Anyway back to the subject at hand. Karen I know what you're saying and I have to agree. Listening to people talk about their own shows and then going to see them often times brings surprises. The fact of the matter is most if not all of us take pride in what we do and that gets expressed here. But in the end one's self assessment of their skills usually means very little. In fact I dare say that those here who know their show has weaknesses and what they are probably have the better shows because they're the ones that will be actively working to improve.

And I'll share something. A while back I took a business trip to a city where a few of our members are located. I checked out one of their shows and chose to remain anonymous because I really was disappointed by what I saw in contrast to what I had heard here. I chose not to sing and I'm pretty sure that person did not recognize me at the bar. Out of respect I haven't mentioned it and will not identify them but it was a reminder that we all need to constantly work to improve our shows no matter how good we believe they are.

Sadly, I don't think it would matter at all if you made suggestions - a person has to realize they have a problem, a shortcoming, an issue, or whatever, before they will do anything about it - and then, even if they do realize it, if they don't know how to solve it, they are no better for all that thinking.

We don't need the perpetuation of this statement: "Karaoke is a joke." But I fear that that very thing is happening in many places.

It's not that Karen.
Many who are told of a flaw won't accept it.

MOST KJs are no different than most singers. They think that they are better at their task than they actually are and there is no telling them any different. No matter what equipment they own, they think it's "top of the line" and no matter how tone deaf a singer may be; they are convinced that they are "top shelf" and can't believe they didn't win the local karaoke contest...or they refuse to go to live karaoke because they don't get the same "appreciation" there that they get from karaoke web sites, where people give out high praise for just about anything at all.

I agree with this almost fully. The only exception is when someone who actually does have "skills", but gets outclassed by someone else. But some people just won't accept their own faults, or won't realize them and change

Funny you should say that. I've invested almost 13 years in this business, have a great selection of music, know how to do sound, and make people sound very good, and at times I want to just quit. It own't last long, though. I love doing it and at times it just gets a little overwhelming...but I'm like the eveready karaoke host I'm afraid.

I couldnt have put it better..

Letitrip, you sure you didnt visit one of my shows?? im pretty rusty lately. The only one of our members who I know has come to my shows Im pretty sure was disappointed. I had one of those nights where nothing went right! so I know i was disappointed. I set myself up for it, had a fill in start the show (first time i ever did that) and it just went down from there.

I would like to think I run a decent show. I do wonder though. You get enough sunshine blown up your butt and you actually start believin' it. I visit other shows often to compare notes, etc. and feel pretty good about what I'm doing so that's a plus in my book. I would love to look some of you guys up and visit your shows if I ever go on vacation again. Sadly, it's gonna be awhile before that happens.

Here is what I've figured out..... You can't gauge how good a show is on the amount of

SONGS THEY HAVE
MONEY THEY SPENT ON EQUIPMENT
SIZE OF THE ROTATION BIG OR SMALL

I've found that if 80% of the singers love your show there are the other 20% who don't. As JD said ..I'v been to horrible sounding shows and had a GREAT TIME and vice versa. I've been to great sounding shows and had a so so time.
It's all about YOU and what you want to do. I prefer a great sounding show with a stage in a big venue with hundred of people applauding each singer. KNOW OF ANY ?

Agreed, this is why I posted the thread a while back asking how much stock people put in the compliments they get. Personally, I usually take it as a sign someone had a good time which is a good thing and does make my show successful. However, even if they tell me I'm better than so-and-so or whatever, that usually means little to me.

And supercharged, no it definitely wasn't one of yours. The show I went to was out of state. I haven't been to yours yet but do want to check it out sometime.

Tony I'm afraid you've made us all paranoid LMAO I'd be devastated if it was my show and I didn't get to meet you.

I've had people from KS come to my show before and am always so excited that they'd come to my little space in the world. I'm always hoping that if people come it is on one of my busier nights, so they can see the regulars in action. They are so friendly and entertaining. I had one regular here come in under cover thinking him and his wife would just leave if it was horrible. They blew their cover relatively early in the night when I went over to talk to them though. Hi Johnny !:D

I would never pretend to the best at what I do, but at least hope no one was disappointed when they came in. I don't work in a big fancy place, but would hope everyone here would appreciate a smaller friendly place. :D

Compliments are well, but just like criticism, I take it with a grain of salt. You'll always have that guy who wants to control the mix while he's singing, and gets mad because you won't make the mic hotter (yes, I will fake it, but that doesn't always work).

You will always have the guy who loves you no matter how you mix it.

The key is repetition. If I hear the same things over and over again, good or bad, I pay attention.
