I've been spraying my microphone heads with lysol. Anyone else doing this? There isn't anything detrimental to my mics by doing this is there??? |

Do you mean frequently throughout your show? If so, the only thing I would worry about is rust forming on the innards if done too frequently and not dried quickly and properly. It can definitely do damage if the innards get too wet. That's why I've been using disinfecting wipes after every singer. I risk the same thing happening, but the moisture is probably not going as deep as a spray would. After every show I pull the mic head apart and give it a thorough cleaning and dry it well. |

According to my daughter the nurse, rubbing with alcohol is only efficacious if the alcohol actually DRIES before the singer uses the mic. I would worry about getting too much moisture inside the head as well. I think everyone who was worried being issued one of those gross "socks" for the mic would be safer for the mics. |

Tape your microphones to a stand so the singers can't pick them up and then run a small current thru the cable so if any part of their LIPS actual touch the windscreen they get a shock. Should help the situation |

And Karen, your daughter is correct. The disinfectant should DRY to make it 100% effective, unless it's bleach. That's why I use the wipes. As soon as the singer is finished, I take the mic from them with the wipe by grabbing the mic head and then I quickly give a thorough wipe to the rest of it. By the time the next singer gets up, it's either completely dry or mostly dry. My aim is to touch the mic only with the wipe and not my hands. If nothing else, it possibly keeps me from getting sick and it shows my singers that I at least care about them, even if it's not wholly effective. Better this than nothing at all.

Unless someone is obviously sick I don't do anything, but clean the mics at the end of the night. Wiping down the mics after every singer is a chore and time consuming for me. Bless your heart if your doing it. It isn't only the head of the mic that gets effected, but anything a sick person touches. The mic stand, cord, books etc.... If someone is obviously sick I take hand sanitizer rub it in my hands, wipe it over the head of the mic and handle. This way no one sees it done and isn't offended because I'm only cleaning the mic after them.

I also use the lysol wipes. I wipe them down before the show and a couple of times during the show. If anyone coughs into the mic, I'll wipe it after their song. |

Anyone with a milking barn knows that the cows have to walk through a fine disinfectant spray when they enter the milking parlor - why don't we institute that at every venue? Would cure a LOT of problems! |

I wish I could use hand sanitizer, but it chemically burns me, so I can't. Something in it... So I use the wipes. I did find it time consuming at first, but it's quickly becoming second nature and in no time at all will be as fast as anything else I do. I do wipe down the whole mic and even down onto the top portion of the cord. I have yet to have anyone insulted. In fact I've been thanked several times by several different people. |

If you're spraying them with Lysol I I hope you're removing the grill from the rest of the mic before you spray it. I wouldn't want to risk getting lysol on the mic element itself as that could have potentially corrosive effects. |

I use Clorox Disinfecting Wipes because a local hospital uses them on computer keyboards. According to the ER staff, the residual keeps bacteria from re-growing for two days or more. None of the wipes have ever harmed the keyboards, and the computers have remained functional for years. |

Let's face it, these germs are all around us and most of us can't invest the time during a busy show for a wipedown after every singer. We can only do the best we can...but I agree that in these times we should at least be doing SOMETHING to curb the spreading of germs on the mic.

We use the wipes as well. Also we use windscreens & wash them with anti-bacterial soap then nuke them in the microwave... |

I really don't like them either and won't sing through one, but fact is, there may be people who go from show to show to sing and might find comfort in using them. I may pick up a bunch and give them to anyone who wants one. I must remember to take the Clorox wipes to my show on Thursday. I don't let anyone use my mic and I avoid handling the singer's mics but for sure even the most benign contact can result in passing around an illness. |

I think what you're doing is great ! My problem is when I couldn't keep up with the cleaning after every singer. I was doing it here and there. That's when I ran into the rpoblem of people saying, why after I sing and not so & so. I would think that if you did it after every singer there would be no problem. No one should complain and should be thankful. |

And while all of this "mic cleaning" is going on during your show, who's cleaning the faucets and doorknobs in the lavatories? I do clean the mics after each show. And I wipe down the cabling (that I must touch) about once a week. And I do use products like lysol and clorox when I clean! Has anyone considered cleaning the mic cables during the show? Let's not overlook how many people like to grab the cable in their hand and/or wrap it around some part of their arm |
