Post subject:  Karaoke Live Setup-Help

Hi,

Would someone mind Criticising my setup please. I've attached a basic diagram of the kit and how it sits together. I've noticed during performances that using the mics whilst the music is playing is causing clipping on the amp.

Is everything connected as you would expect? Would you recommend having something else in there or using it a different way?

Any help would be appreciated.

That Alesis mixer sounds like crap when you use the USB on it. When using the USB you have no eq control.

I suggest a seperate USB sound card.

I've got the same mixer with no issues, BUT I'm not hooking up though the USB either.
Try running out of the 1/8 inch audio jack on your laptop into the 1/4 on your mixer, just to see if the USB is the problem. If it sounds better, consider a separate USB as lyquiddye recommended.

What kind of amp & speakers is it? How big is the place? How loud are you pushing the volume? Are the gains set properly on the mixer?
I haven't used the USB in the mixer as a sound card only for some light recording in which it did ok. Since you say it is only happening on the music, it stands to reason there could be a problem with the USB path. Take the suggestions above & if it doesn't do it with the 1/8" connection going to a channel on the mixer, then consider a good USB I/O. Take a look at the Lexicon Alpha. Good price & great sound.

Post subject:  Check the wireless mic output also

the output of the wireless mic receiver may not be a microphone level signal and could be overloading your mic input. You might need to plug it into a instrument or line level input.

Without looking at the way you have your gain structure set up, it's hard to say.

Do a search on this forum for "gain structure", I am almost positive that is at the root of your issues. A while back I posted a link to a pretty good article on how to setup gain structure, I think that would take you a long way toward solving the issue. I don't think the use of the USB interface is the issue, you've got much bigger fish to fry if you're pushing the amp into clip.

Here's one pretty simple guide I found with a quick google search:

There are a lot of articles out there so look around.
