I think that recent discussions have centered on two extremes, one where the Karaoke must keep every customer happy regardless, and the other where it is some sort of compromize between what the KJ is willing to provide and what the signer expects.
I think that some of this is due to the ammount of competition in the area. The only karaoke show in town has to cater to all the singers, but a area with many shows may target their audience to a subset of the karaoke singers.
So the question (for KJs) is how many other karaoke shows are going on in your area.
For purposes of discussion let's call an area within a 10 mile drive.

There are probably 5-6 more shows within 10 miles on my Wednesday night and about 20-25 shows within 10 miles on my Saturday night.
I still have the biggest crowds of all of them, and my bar is probably in the middle as far as size. I'm not sure I'd put the # of competitors in my top factors that affect the size of my show week to week. I'd say the top factors are:
#1) Bar atmosphere/drink prices vs. area demographics -> Blue Collar bar with cheap beer in a prodominately blue collar area
#2) Smoking vs. Non-Smoking bar -> smoking bars are far busier than non-smoking here in town
#3) Entertainment value/skill of the karaoke host/equipment, # of songs, etc.
#4) Other things to do at the bar (i.e., pool tables, fooseball, sports on TV, etc.)

24 Other shows Friday, 18 Saturday. That are advertised and I know of . . .
It hits a low on Mondays with 8 shows, and a high of 29 on Thursdays . . . again that are advertised. There's also probably several each night that don't advertise for whatever reason.

I don't know exactly, but there is a lot. There are 3 just down the street.
There is band karaoke, a bar that has karaoke every night, club karaoke, small bar karaoke etc... You name it.
I have to admit I don't really worry about the competition. I just do the best job I know how. I know that is a luxury most don't have and am very grateful.

There are no other regular shows within 10 miles on any night of the week. There are no long-established shows within 20 miles on any night of the week. There are some periodic karaoke nights at random places nearby (6 and 17 miles).
Most shows are more than a half-hour drive for me. My show is the only regular one within 15 minutes.

There are many other shows but whether they are competition or not is another story.

With the exception of my monthly Tuesday night gig, my other shows all have 5 or more other shows within a 10 mile radius. There's a definite glut of Karaoke in my area.

I couldn't even guesstimate how many shows within a 10 mile radius, I can tell you AT LEAST 10 shows within a 10 block radius from my house alone. Apply that as an average to a 10 mile block.

Our population is 5,000 with a similar-sized town about 10 minutes away. Within that there are 3 bars with karaoke. Our bar and the bar next door have karaoke Thurs/Fri/Sat and the one in the nearby town has it on Fridays. Our competition next door on Thursdays has a combo karaoke/line dancing thing they are trying to get going.
The next closest karaoke is in the range of 30 to 60 minutes away in three different directions. There are at least 5 shows on Friday and 2 on Thursdays. One of the Thursdays is a casino show. Go to 60 to 90 minutes away and you hit the Carson City/Reno areas and they sometimes even have it in the-uh--cat houses. We haven't tried to compete with that, unless it is just using inflatables. Believe it or not we get some people from the towns 45 minutes away at our tiny place. Also have a rare visit from a Reno couple and a friend from where we used to sing comes from 3 hours away every few months or so.
We play singer's discs, order songs on request, bring them food, give them prizes, fill out their slips, look up songs, wash their cars--okay, not the last one. But is is getting close.

In my area I am the only Karaoke show around , unless you want to drive 1hr+ away.
Guess I am lucky. There were 2 other KJs in the area, but one "retired" from Karaoke last week after 15 years. The other has crap system & sound, and has no gigs.
The only competition I have is myself. That being said, I am down to 2 reoccurring gigs. One is Every Saturday nite, with alternating Karaoke/Dj every other week. The other is a once a month gig. I do get good crows at those gigs, but do have some slow nites too.
5 years ago there were 5 KJs in the area, with shows usually every thrs, fri & sat nites. But now it is just me, unless you drive 1 hr+ away.

There are 9 other karaoke shows advertised as taking place as the same time as mine. These are all within 45 mins of each other.
Sundays- 5 shows in the area
Mondays- 3 shows
Tuesdays- 8 shows
Wednesdays- 9 shows
Thursdays- 10 shows
Fridays- 7 shows
Saturdays- 7 shows
I'm sure there are more, these are just the ones that I see advertised regularly.
Smaller bars may not advertise, except on premise.

What exactly constitutes "your area"? I live in a fairly large metropolitan area (over 1 million people), so on any given night there might be 100+ shows somewhere. My four venues are all about 10-15 miles apart from each other, and all but one at least 10 miles from my home. Competition is everywhere, but "good" competition isn't.
I don't really know how many shows are within 10 milles of any of my gigs. I don't have the time or the inclination to determine that.

In the interest of furthering your business, it certainly helps to know who you're up against. I know all the venues that surround mine, who is hosting there, what kind of drink specials the bars offer, any special features (contests), etc.
That knowledge also makes me more valuable to my boss as his resident "karaoke expert" to help him determine how and what to market on karaoke nights up against his competition.
Shows that I'm serious about his business, not just my gig.
