I have a Mackie 808M and it appears my dampening knob has taken on a mind of it's own. I was getting a horrible echo from my system and discovered my dampening knob's adjustments are off. I used to keep the knob straight up which is basically the normal position. The settings go from zero to ten. Now I've found the position to have slid to the left quite a bit. For instance what used to be the 5 position is now the 3 position. What the heck? How do I fix this.

It's not a huge problem because I know where to set it to get the right sound, but I'd like my equipment to be working correctly. Plus I don't want it getting worse.

when you turn the knob all the way counter clockwise when it reaches the end does it point to zero? and if you turn it all the way clockwise does it point to 10?

If not I'm thinking the knob has slipped on the shaft.

If it does listen to some music and turn it from zero to 10 slowly and see if you can see a difference all the way up. If you don't get an equal increase it could be that your pot shorted out internally.

If all works fine then I'll have to rethink.

Ahh the wonders of cheap pots. Honestly Babs, this is not all that uncommon with inexpensive boards. Essentially each knob is a potentiometer (pot). What that means in English is its a device that as you turn it creates a variable amount of electrical resistance usually ranging from no resistance to some very high amount. That resistance prevents a certain amount of voltage from going through which is what gives you volume or other level controls. As these pots wear out, a few things can happen. They can develop dead spots where there is no electrical connection at all (infinite resistance) or, as the case with what you're experiencing now, the degree at which the resistance increases or decreases as you turn the knob changes over time.

So now back to total English, what it sounds like you're experiencing is the slow deterioration of that particular component. Nothing you can really do about it, Mackie would charge a fortune to fix it. There is a guy up here that I know who does some board level repair on Mackie equipment however, it's probably not worth the cost. Just keep using it accounting for the shift in position and you'll be fine.

I have a Yamaha MG124CX (still sealed in it's box) which was passed on to me by a bandmate. After mobile gigging it 3 times I had to admit that I'm not confident with the mixer. Yes it works as it should but I doubt it would last long so I decided to upgrade. I bought the Soundcraft MFXi8. Everything is just night and day on the build quality. All in all I have three mobile mixers... Yamaha MG124CX, Edirol M-10DX and Soundcraft MFXi8. I will keep the Soundcraft and Edirol... the Yamaha will be donated to an elementary school nearby :)

So what you are saying is your knobs use to stand straight up and now they slid a little to the left ? :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
