I was talking to a DJ/KJ friend of mine who does DJ mostly FULL TIME. He was telling me that his bookings are off a little from previous years. Some companies who have been booking him for Holiday parties for years ..canceled this year. He also lost a mid week gig at a small bar ..due to lack of business. Other bars are very slow.... I may or may not be getting that gig starting in January ( still waiting for confirmation) - But have decided to look for NEW GIGS aggresively after the 1st. The NEW YEAR may be a good time to touch base with your OWNERS/MANAGERS and discuss business conditions and goals or expectations for 2010. No KJ wants to lose their gig ( singers don't want to lose karaoke either) so a little proactive marketing might be way to stay ahead. Let's discuss positive ways to improve the state of KARAOKE for 2010 |

I just got a new gig and want to add another. So the end of 2009 has been good to me. Hoping for a better 2010. |

The first step is analyzing the real problems and resolving or getting around them. I feel the economy will take a sharp turn after the first. This is the major factor right now. From experience and history during bad times that is when folks party more to forget the bad times. That is becoming more and more difficult. I have talked to some club type owners that are trying to sell and go south. DUI and heavy legal issues and restrictions have all but killed the going out and partying crowds. We have what we call here garage bars where the neighbors drink at home. They run everybody home then have to pass new noise ordinances and not to mention the increase in domestic violence. These lawmakers do not have a clue what problems they are causing. My landlord already is suggesting karaoke for her pool parties. I am thinking about having "block" parties for my neighbors. Noise would be a factor. Country parties might be another option. It takes a lot of promotion (POSITIVE) to attract consistent crowds and the cops now are afraid of crowds. I think I am in the wrong decade!!!! It also takes going out and beating the bushes and becoming acquainted with those handling parties like event planners in major chains. |

I think this is a great topic to keep going. I think it would be helpful to many to have ideas on how to grow your business in hard economic times. I am fortunate to have secure (knock on wood) gigs that I am not effected as of yet, but I can see how many here would have the need to swap ideas. I'm surprised there aren't more responses. Is no one doing anything different? |

What any KJ who has a steady gig should do in 2010 is sit down with the decision maker (owner or manager) and discuss business and expectations. From my own experiances and of those I've read about . STEADY GIGS can become UNSTEADY real fast !!!!!!! |

I agree good communication is key to keeping gigs. I just talked to the owner of the bar I'm at and he is adding a few extra nights of karaoke for the next few weeks. People go out more during the holidays and he wants to capitalize on that. He also wanted to make sure I wasn't working any where else. I think he likes keeping me all to himself. I actually got the unheard of raise last yr because he heard another bar was aggressively pursuing me. I feel pretty secure, but never take it for granted I'll always have a job there. I think this time of yr is a great time to approach bars that wouldn't normally have karaoke. Bars look to do something special for the holidays. It maybe a way to get a foot in the door. |
