If you had two identical karaoke songs, and one had video with it and the other didn't (just the text), which would you prefer?

I might like the video part the first time I sing a particular song for the novelty. But after that, it feels like more of a distraction than anything else.

I pay more attention to the music. Some videos on he old pioneer lasers bring back memories..

I prefer no videos, they are distracting to many, it takes focus off of the singer when something stupid is showing on the screen. I do still have & use the Pioneer video discs simply because much of their music is much better than most other brands. But singers that use them, don't really care for the videos showing and do complain on occasion.

Well, I'd say there is one exception -- if you really want a laugh, ladies, sing "Blue Bayou" and catch the very last screen.....it's a screamer.....

Over here, people prefer video karaoke; but then the video are mostly original artist clips.

I always liked Pioneer 8-B-2 (as I fondly called it, "The Barbie Doll Song").

Personally, I feel that the Videos are a distraction, because most of them have absolutely nothing to do with the song. Most of those Videos are just fun to make fun of (case-in-point - see above statement). I prefer straight text/graphics without a video.

As a singer I kind of like the videos. If the song gets overplayed though, it might get tiresome. If there is a long instrumental in the song, it helps keep the song moving. I think Soundchoice should come out with a video version of their set.

I voted for the video (all else being equal), but it depends on the video. Some of them are great, others just don't fit or aren't fun.

The foreign VCD videos which just have the words quickly scrolling on the bottom are tough to follow if the song has a quick tempo. The screen doesn't refresh quickly enough for the next line if you're only displaying words on the bottom half of the screen.

Certainly anyone using certain computer-based software can superimpose any text-only karaoke songs over any video or picture.

As a host I don't want anything distracting to the singer or the audience. The singer needs to concentrate on the lyrics, the audience should be watching the singer onstage.

Want to play videos? Play them between singers.

The Pioneer videos are interesting--quite a variety though some of the actors show up in more than one. I'm curious how long it took Pioneer to make their whole karaoke set, how many total actors they used in their videos, and where the videos were made. Some are almost...well...works of art. Some are funny, some droll, some weird. I like the skating/skateboarding in the Doobies China Grove song. I think if they made a video like that today, it would be even better considering some of the acrobatics the x-games skateboarders can do. Many of the songs I like to sing are available in the Pioneer set.

I have to admit that I miss the little soap opera Pioneer videos...I get a kick out of going into a bar that still uses them.

There was a section about them and how they were made in the book, "Don't Stop Believin," which is the book written last year about the history (through the eyes of a Karaoke fanatic) of Karaoke. Interesting.

While over time it has become clear to me that most people on this forum don't miss the old Pioneer laser discs and the "soap opera" videos, I have been gaining a greater appreciated of karaoke videos over the last year!

And then this past weekend, I was at a venue that has been offering Karaoke since 1989 and offers karaoke 7 days a week. It plays very few tracks that don't have the "soap opera" videos. (I like that terminology---- "soap opera")

IMHO, based upon longevity and hours of operation, that venue must know what they are doing. So, it really doesn't matter to me what this poll reflects, I am heading towards offering more and more soap opera videos. If nothing else, I think they provide more entertainment value for the non-singing audience!

BTW, this venue has some how transferred its laser discs to computer, along with every other media they use!

Agreed. Back in 1992, at the Bombay Bicycle Club in Biloxi, MS. The Pioneer Laser format was all the venue provided. I preferred them then and I would offer them now if I could afford them. I also noticed that the "non-singer" did in fact stay longer because they were entertained by the associated video. When I moved to another location that offered only CDG format there weren’t as many non-singers hanging in there. My x-wife said that it made the not-so-good singers tolerable when she had the video to watch.

I think it depends on the type of video set up and personal preference.

A few years back I experimented with different videos behind the words. I had it set up so I could play any kind of video in the back ground. People complained it was hard to read the words and didn't like it, especially my older crowd. I found I was turning it off more than using it because of this.

If the video was designed to make sure the words were highly legible at all times I think it would work, but to just play any video behind the words is more challenging.

Some videos or graphics are comical they are so old school. It reminds me of when I was in grade school and they used out dated videos to explain something. If I could design a CDG I'd run a cool video clip just during the music breaks of a song that way there would be no distraction from the words or the singer and people could be entertained during non singing time.
