Hi all,

I have collected a bunch of cd+g CD's over the years, but am now interested in what the Asian karaoke boxes have (karaoke with video background). I'm wondering if its possible to turn CD+Gs to something like Karaoke VCDs. (yes I know its more distracting).

I went to this Korean Karaoke box, and they had a rotation of random music videos to go along with each song. The lyrics all looked like the VCD kind (ie. lyrics at the bottom of the screen vs. right in the middle like most CDGs), but the song lyrics were NOT integrated with the video, so maybe they came from a sort of CD+G file, but with nicer text.

What software/product out there can do this?
ie. 1)import CD+G files
2)places the lyrics at the bottom of the screen and maybe improve the text style (cause aren't CD+G just somewhat text files that should be customizable? or is it an image?).
3) and then has a random video in the background that changes when a new song starts.

I can't seem to find anything,

Any help would be great, thanks!

Nope, very unlikely you will find anything. There is no text or timing data in a CDG file, just pixels. Go to www.freewebs.com/sacksonuts and at the bottom of the page you will find a link to a document that explains all the gory details of CDG.

You could have the application custom written but that might be pretty spendy.

It would not be much of a trick to super-impose text on a video but that would mean you would have to enter the text and timing data yourself. So... just how badly do you want to do this?

All the box type places use a video disc - either still using LaserDisc or DVD, VCD that have the video already imbedded on the track itself, it's not an added in feature. The only thing you could do with cdg is add a picture for the background - but this would not be changing the cdg tracks, it's just a file that shows up underneath the words, not an actual video. Powerkaraoke's Siglos Pro does allow this feature, I believe a couple others do as well.
There were machines YEARS ago, doubtful you will find them, that DID have a superimpose feature where you could connect a VCR & show the contents underneath the words.
Worst come to worst if you really HAVE to have the video, you can always invest in a video mixer.

I have seen that "format" of video being used as background on a karaoke track at a local sushi place. It is a bit odd at times as the video is a constant loop of sceenes from asian movies that is not cooridinated to the song specifically being sung. In the worst case the video can be just WRONG for the song being sung. I remember one song where the video showed someone being beat up with a baseball bat in an asian movie, while the karaoke song was a mellow slow paced love song....

As far as I can tell that is a system that is not exactly compatable with the US standard CDG karaoke system.

I see little problem with it conceptually as most CDG karaoke is lyrics as a picture with a timing sweep, BUT with a background color that can be set to whatever you wish. One karaoke program allows you to put whatever (still) picture you want as a background.

Practically I don't know of any program that will allow the merge of the video +karaoke system, unless you can get the Korean system to accept western format CDGs into their hard drive.

yeah,
the place where I went probably had a video mixer along with one of those expensive custom/higher-end/asian CDG-type subscription services that are different than the North American CDGs.

Cause the videos were all korean hip-hop music videos, even though the songs being sung were old english love songs...HAHA.

Still, the CDG text on these look amazing, just like the style of the old polygram laserdiscs.
