This past year, I've been running my shows in mono using one side of my powered mixer for the mains, and the other side for the monitor. It's o-k, but everything really sounds better in stereo. So, it's time for a powered monitor. Someone suggested saving a little money and using a guitar amp for the reference monitor. Most of the powered stage monitors are several hundred dollars, and you can get a used guitar amp on Craig's list for under $100. I figure I won't need that much power, and as long as it has a sweepable mid, it should work. What 'cha think ?

Are you able to set up in the clubs where stereo actually works better? 90% of the places i've worked, stereo doesn't work well - from bands to karaoke. Only if the speakers are places in a position that the entire crowd can hear the entire mix.
Just wondering.

I run a couple monitors on stage, not alot of power, probably about 200 watts to the 12's & 100 watts to the highs. Have a 31 band eq on them for feedback control, I wouldn't rely solely on the 3 band eq built into most of the powered models - even with the swept mid.

I use the mackie SRM 150 for the stage monitor, and don't know of anything that would beat the sound, it works fantastick!!

If you care about your sound at all, don't do this. Electric Guitar amps are made for electric guitars, and the speakers are configured to be at their best in the midrange freqs of the guitar. No highs, no lows.

A keyboard or acoustic guitar amp with a woofer and tweeter would be a better choice, if you really want to experiment with this.

Yeah, I plugged my mixer into my guitar amp once just to see what it sounded like, and it definitely was not useful for anything other than the guitar.

I use a passive yamaha BR12 as my monitor in my club gig, but anytime I do a private karaoke party with my smaller rig, I use a Fender 1270P, which is 100 watts powered and can be had on Ebay for about $225.00.

If you have your karaoke in a smaller bar, or at lowere SPLs, I would HIGHLY recommend this powered monitor! Just use it as it is meant to be used, and it performs very very well!!

We use 350s and 450s and I thought it'd be great to have a 150 for a monitor but WOW! spendy for the little booger.

Does anyone have an opinion about the Harbinger 12" powered speaker as a monitor ? I found them at Musician's Friend for $150.00.

I started a nice big bar where I actually need monitors for my karaoke singers.

I decided to use a pair of QSC K-12's for monitors. They are cheap and sound great.
