I have a simple question. I have a speical Fx for basic karaoke for everyone. Would you suggest I keep a record for all songs and what special effects to use for each song. Like what to use for country, what to use for rock, etc. Any suggestions would be great. |

I don't think you need to be that formal. You can use a basic reverb for all types of music. Effects in general are something that you put on the VOCAL, not on the song, so a basic vocal effect is the same no matter what style of music it is. Above that, you might just want to play around with some other effects that you hear in the radio version of songs, like the HEAVY reverb on PURPLE RAIN. Otherwise, just stick with the basic reverb!! Do a search of the forum archives for effects/reverb and you'll find plenty of good advise on basic and more advanced effects techniques. |

I'd agree with Topher, I definitely wouldn't suggest trying to have a list. There are a few basic rules but honestly just go with what sounds right to you. A couple quick thoughts for you: In general (not always but usually) slow songs will have more noticeable FX. Usually a heavy reverb and maybe a slower delay as well. I'd also suggest that when you listen to whatever music you listen to, try to notice what they do with their effects. When they use more, when they use less, what type they use in what places, etc. The better you get at identifying that, the better feel you'll develop for how and when to add FX into your own mix. When all else fails and you're not sure what to do, bring in a good reverb just enough so that you don't really notice it, but would notice the difference if it were shut off. That's a general rule that will always sound good. Finally, don't be afraid to experiment, you'd be amazed some of the cool stuff you can find just by accident. |
