For Karaoke in a family room size of 20 ft x 18 ft, which speaker is a better choice?

Mackie MR5 Active Studio Monitor, $179 each, or
Behringer B205D Active PA Speaker, $ 149 each

I don't think I would like either. I would go for something 12" or so -- at that price point you basically have the Harbinger.

I have seen 8" speakers in a similar size room, and just don't like them. 5" speakers don't seem like they would be worth that much.

If you have a current home theater system, you could consider playing the music portion on that and using those speakers for vocals only.

Along the lines of what mckyj57 said, if you're going to get those smaller studio monitors, they would work but you'll want to get the matching sub-woofer as well. Of the two sets you proposed, I'd recommend the Mackies over the Behringers.

Between 12" Harbinger and 5" Mackie at similar price point, which one would you recommend then?

BTW, I can not find Mackie subwoofer listed on Musician's Friend under Recording, Subwoofer. Am I looking at the wrong place? Thanks.
