No doubt, an amazing board 8) I own the Zed 14 and it's day & night compared with my Mackie 1402 VLZ PRO

If I was going to buy a mixer for $500 or less, that would be a respectable choice. I wouldn't mind an entry-level Yamaha in that price range, either.

I will say I went a different direction and have an external FX device, a Lexicon MX400XL, which is much better than any of the built-in FX I have heard in the entry/MI-level units. I would rather have a dirt cheap, crappy Behringer mixer, and a good external FX unit; than a slightly better mixer with built-in FX.

I believe the Soundcraft EFX 8 for around $400 is the best deal out there if you're looking for better than the typical mixers from Yamaha, Peavey, Mackie etc. It has the superior Lexicon vocal effects built in.

I'm very happy with my compact little Alesis Multimix 8 USB, but it has knobs rather than sliding faders and some folks prefer the sliding faders. The vocal effects and mic pre-amps are very good and it's only about $150. I have not used either the A&H or the Soundcraft, but I do plan on eventually getting the EFX 8 when I can afford it. Until then the Alesis works and sounds great. One of the best pieces of gear I've ever purchased.

I'd stretch for for an A&H Mixwiz3. I have the 12:2 model. I've found it superior to my previous Zed-14. Secondhand they can be had at around the $600 mark. A real pro desk with a raft of features including an editable FX section (via midi). The editor is free from A&H.
