Post subject:  About Speaker (stage monitor/Bose/Polk...) - dare not to post in "Technical Questions" board
Why don't I post this in "Technical Questions" board? Because I think I will receive a lot of suggestions to buy PA speakers. I have read numerous posts in Technical Questions board about speakers. I understand that 15" PA speaker performs best for Karaoke. But my concern is,
1) they are too expensive for my budget
2) they are too heavy and big for home use in my opinion

I post it in this board to see if there is anyone has real experience using smaller HiFi speaker or stage monitor for home Karaoke and can give me some advice.

Right now I have Yamaha MG102C/Lexicon MX-200/Phonic Powerpack 408 PA package with 10" stage monitor. I recently auditioned a friend's similar setup. He has Denon Receiver and Bose 301 speakers. It sounds better.

So looking to replace Phonic PA package with new speakers hook to my Onkyo receiver, my research narrowed down the list to,
1) Bose 301, 2 2" tweeter, 8 inch woofer
2) Polk RTi A1, 1 1" tweeter, 5 1/4" woofer
3) Energy RC 10, 1 1" tweeter, 5 1/2" woofer
4) Paradigm Mini Monitor, 1 1" tweeter, 6 1/2" woofer

Any suggestions are welcome.

OK, you can ask. But I tried it and it didn't work. I had Bose 301s. I stress had because I blew them with vocals. They stood up for a while, then one mistake on gain and whoops!

You can try using home grade speakers - if you don't turn them up, you should be ok, however, I know several people that have blown their speakers - myself included because you just tend to want to turn the volume up when you start getting into it.
Look into a JBL Powered EON 10" for home. Drop the Phonic out of the equation & just use the Yamaha/Lexicon.

I'd still consider the 15" speakers, but try looking at a place like Music-Go-Round to see if you can find something used. Just make sure to test them out thoroughly. Also, there's always people selling off their stuff on Craigslist.

I'd rather have a decedent pair of used speakers than new ones that don't have enough power, or won't be able to handle your load.

I used to use the entry level Yamaha BR12's long ago when I had a home/basement karaoke setup. They worked very well.

I looked in MF, it seems JBL EON510 10" costs $599.00 each. That's about 4x of what I want to spend. :(

BR12 is passive. I don't think my Onkyo receiver can push it. What Amp do you have?

I'd prefer under $400 for the pair and under 30 lb each.

I just realized how small those bookshelf speakers when compare to even a 10" stage monitor.

MTX looks good and I can use it with my receiver. Thanks for the tip.

I still have mine in my living room for practice, connected to my Pioneer VPX at 120WRMS per channel. Of course I really caught the karaoke bug and now own Yorkville and Yamaha speakers for shows now, but the MTX served me well for a year.

You will be best served if you put them up at just above head height, with the horns at 7 feet. I have mine too high right now, and should really lower the speaker brackets (I mounted mine on the wall).

First, I happen to agree with you, 15" Two-Way speakers are NOT appropriate for use in your home. Not unless you've got a 50'x100' basement you're playing in and even then they'd be overkill.

Look at active monitor speakers, seriously the best way to go. A good set of JBL's complete with a subwoofer can be had for around $700. If you want, there are also cheaper options (Mackie, Behringer, etc.). Those would be much more appropriate for your application and you don't have to worry about any possibility that they aren't built to handle the dynamic range of live vocals.

Personally, I've used stereo speakers for live vocals plenty of times without issue. Others hear describe a different experience. I guess you can take your chances.

MTX Audio TP112 is available for $200 now. Do you by any chance know if it has the stand socket in the bottom?
