Hello all. I am not sure if this is the correct forum for my question so please bear with me. Does anyone know the exact licensing protocol for making original karaoke discs? If a small record label puts out a cover album, they contact the publisher (and/or their administrator, usually Harry Fox in the US) and gets a mechanical license and pay 8.5 cents to the publisher or administrator per song per album sold. However, the standard mechanical license does not cover Karaoke music. I am assuming a label must directly contact the publisher of the composition in question (for something akin to a synchronization license but for karaoke). Does anyone have any further detail on this? Does anyone know the standard licensing fees for a karaoke license. For example when a company like Priddis wants to make a karaoke disc of say Sheryl Crow hits, who do they contact and how much do they pay.
Thanks very much in advance for any help.
Best-
Michael Silver

Michael,
I still believe it's either The producer's or label's directly, OR Harry Fox Agency. Ya know Honestly I Control the licensing my own songs directly, and the Publisher that I deal with controls the ones I have licensed through them that are original. The covers are administrated by the Harry Fox Agency.

Ya just need to make some calls around maybe ASCAP or BMI may actually answer your questions.

Good luck.

Micheal,
Are the discs you want to create for your own use (1 disc) or are they
to be produced in mass? Just wondering what the parameters of what you were requesting were. I know nothing about this but I wondered how it worked as well.

Thanks,

Bill
