What's the deal with the new mixers and USB hook up.

Does this take the replace of any external sound card needed when you hook your PC up directly to one of these mixers ??

Well they are supposed to be really more for recording - but I believe many of them act as a sound I/O interface as well, bypassing the internal sound card & eliminating the need for an external.

I guess it depends on the MIXER in question but is the sound coming out expected to be as goos as an external sound card to mixer input?

I was looking at the possibility of a new mixer and power amp combo and curious if I should go for one with USB or not. I just received this sound card and did not get a chance to test it out. But for $120 I could send it back if I get a new mixer LOL

I would still prefer an external myself simple because the ones built into the mixers - that i've actually seen, I haven't really looked at a ton of them, don't have any kind of eq and a simple vol (if any) control other than what is built into the program itself.
I'd probably still opt for an external unit with balanced 1/4" input/outputs like the Lexicon Alpha over one built into the mixer, this gives me more flexibility as far as eq'ing on the fly, adding effects, sending to monitors. Plus it's $40 cheaper also 24 bit vs 16 bit.

Ive the A&H Zed 12fx which has usb which works and sounds well ,only thing ive found and im not sure if its a general problem because its on usb or its something to do with the pc ,but before I was using the usb connection near the end of the night we could unplug items not being used but now if we do it cuts the sound and only way of getting back is to unplug the usb and also means restarting software im using .
Now decided to go back to the old stereo to 1/4 mono cable .
Not seen anyone else mention this so might just be something with my setup but thought it was worth a mention.

Well, with the ZED14 I can say yes, the sound is incredible, day & night difference with my Audigy2 ZS PCMCIA, I can compare it to my pro card Emu-1212m

This mixer usb card has lot's of gain, what ever you play will always sound open, clear and smooth, don't know if all usb mixers sound great but this one sure does  What I like is that the sound card works like a line in, it's routed to a channel strip so you get the slider, highs, lows, balance and the gain adjustment! The more I think of it, this ZED14 is a bargain, it has a great audio card, excellent mic pre-amps, full size sliders and it came with Cakewalk which alone is worth over $100.00

I use the Mackie Pro Fx12, and am very pleased with it. I'm by no means a sound tech, but I think it sounds great. I've compared the way my mixer sounds to others used in my area, and think mine sounds (at least) as good as any other.

i have the zed 12fx and have been struggling to get good sounding recordings from it.I have tried sonar le 8.5 and an older adobe auditon.I had a post here earlier, doesn't look like any one else has had any problems.Still can't figure out if it's my set up or the mixer.Sound quality is pretty bad.
