I have a venue, that just opened up recently and we were talking about doing karaoke one night, he has been to my other venues and liked how I hosted it. He did ask if i could do his location and keep it just Country and Classic Rock. Has anyone ever done a venue just like this and how did it work. This bar is set in country saloon look, it is in a upper class area, in center of a town just wanting some input. It only runs karaoke 830- 11 ish, because there is residents right above him and across the streets

Sounds easy enough, just print different books for that venue, and only include the country and classic rock. Your book won't be as appealing (visually), BUT the stuff you have in it will be SPECIFIC, and therefore people won't have to hunt through alot of stuff they'd NEVER sing anyhow. The ONLY reason I say it won't be as visually appealing, is that MOST people look at the SIZE of the book, rather than the CONTENT, which in my opinion is TOTALLY wrong, but that's life.

Hi Lonewolf,
My wife and I run a show with the music selection you are describing (country and oldies), and it is unbelievably successful. We attract few to no drunks, and very few screamers. My crowd is mostly baby boomers with some extra cash to have fun with. Of course along with Gramma & Grandpa, come the occasional grand child. We do not allow any children under 18 to sing ( no matter how good the parents think they are). Our hours are 7 to 10:30 (or so) on Wed, and 5:30 to 9:00 (or so). Things are going so well that we are adding Saturday 7 to midnight, starting in April.

One of the best things about this type of music, is that once you have your library purchased, you are set for a very long time to come. I do purchase some new music from time to (mostly country) but not much. This way I can put all my efforts into purchasing high quality and reliable equipment. Baby Boomers are just starting to retire, and believe they are ready to have some fun.

I've just country shows in the past and they worked well at the time. Just needed to create new books listing just the country music - make sure not to altar any existing books in the computer, just create a new one. So you would need to figure out & classify what 'classic rock' is to the venue. We have a classic rock station up here that plays all rock from 60's-80's. Some may deem classic rock anything older than 25 years but not as old as? Once you widdle that down, then figure out the disco/pop stuff and pull all that out. A little time consuming, but it is worth it.

Besides your books any marketing or advertisements should be geared towards the type of show you want.

Have banners that read COUNTRY KARAOKE or something similiar.

In this case you can't be worried about turning some folks away --that's I believe is the intention.

There's a local place here that runs a Country Karaoke night that is pretty successful. They actually have now gotten sponsorship from a local country station.

There is a place just like that here in town, and I would offer one suggestion: Add )OLDIES to the list!!

I have substituted at this place quite a few times. It is a saloon-type country bar that has southern rock and country live bands 3X a week and karaoke 2X a week. In addition to the country and classic rock karaoke, you are going to HAVE to also have oldies! Trust me!!

At this venue, everyone sings mostly country and classic rock, but also some oldies, and it is the oldies that always fill the dance floor.

Apparently, the posters here believe 1 or 2 genre karaoke can work for you. I don't think I could pull it off in my area though- the singers are just too eclectic...

My question would be how one might assign the songs in one collection to a specific genre. I don't mean the gimmes, but those that are kind of borderline. Not by artist, since many cross over. It wouldn't be as easy or black and white as say, Children's, or Latin, or Holiday....... Thoughts?

I wouldn't run a show without advertising it that way, but yes a 1 or 2 genre karaoke can work if it's promoted that way, people know what to expect. Especially if it's a genre specific club to begin with.

I have all mine catagorized anyway when I originally type them in so it's a little easier. But if it was a crossover type song that hit both the country & pop charts, i'd still add it in the country as it was also a hit there as well.
I wouldn't put Holiday or childrens songs into a mainstream book like that - although do list them in my books all year round & sometimes they actually get used. But if the club specifically wants country & classic rock, Latin - unless it was a song that charted on either of those charts, would not get listed.

From what I understand it is the VENUE requesting to limit the genres.
If it is a COUNTRY bar then it should not be a problem as long as it is advertised as such.

Should be do-able... Would be dumb to expect to do it next to a collage with 21 to 25 year olds running around but other than that go for it.... I wouldn't print separate books as suggested above though as if you do you miss out on a great opportunity to show off your selection to the crowd if they ask you can tell them about the limits of the venue but a great opportunity to promote yourself and your other shows.

Make sure on all your advertising for the show that you put down the limits so you're not surprising anyone when they show up... if you don't people just feel jerked around and there's no quicker way to lose singers
