Post subject:  The New Player

I, for one, am not pleased with the new player. For me, it holds only one advantage and many disadvantages:

1. The one and only advantage I can find, is the time counter….that can be useful if one wants to pinpoint and discuss certain parts in a song with the singer.
2. Disadvantage….A few times in the last week, when I clicked on a song, the whole site shut down on me.
3. I am not able to backtrack or fast forward. …Quite often when I am listening to someone’s song, there may be a certain little part that I find so well done, that I’ll want to go back and listen to it a few times but I can’t now.... cause when I try to, it goes back to the “very beginning” instead.
4. Sometimes when I am listening to someone’s song, I like to glance at the other comments they have already received, and if they happen to have more than one page, I’m out of luck…the song cuts off. ….I don’t appreciate having to open another page to avoid this, I liked it better when it was done automatically when I clicked on a sub.
5. The most IMPORTANT minus, is that it doesn’t give a “view” count… I like to know how many listens I get on my songs. It helps me gauge how well I am doing on each song, and what people enjoy hearing me sing most. Many listeners don’t leave comments but they are still most important to me! ….I pay extra to have a 30 song profile so I can leave many songs up indefinitely for anyone’s listening pleasure…I have some songs on my profile that were subbed 4 years ago. Knowing the amount of listens each song gets, helps me decide which ones to take down or which ones to leave up. …..This is a very “BASIC” feature that is included on all Karaoke sites…and we don’t have it now.

Well, those are my feelings and it felt good to get them off my chest. I would most appreciate hearing how other members feel about the new player. :)

Hello Cinderella,

You said:

"Well, those are my feelings and it felt good to get them off my chest. I would most appreciate hearing how other members feel about the new player."

The subject is already being discussed in the forum ( see Page 2 of "Songs on SS" in this section and in a thread called "question to anyone" in comments, suggestions etc. )

You will find a few different opinions and explanations in those threads

Best Wishes

Roy

Hi Roy... .....Thanks for the info, but the main purpose of the "Songs On SS" thread was to let the tech dept. know that certain people couldn't hear any music at all, (and that was on the old player). .....I realize a couple days later, when the new player did come out, a few people commented regarding their opinions on it, but I thought this subject was important enough to have a thread devoted entirely to it. .....I also think that many more people come in to the Singers Forum, then in the "Comments, Suggestions, Questions" section....and I wanted them to see it.

Read your comment on the other thread... good points you brought up, may I suggest you post it here?

Cheers! :)

Hey Cinders,

Here are my opinions from the other thread:

I also like the new player not opening in a seperate page. I can see the disadvantages too although they can be worked round. Overall I think it's an improvement.

It's a shame that the amount of listens are no longer recorded and made avaliable to us because ( in my opinion ) they are a far more accurate reflection of how well you are doing and if you are heading in the right direction than the amount of comments you receive because if you tell everybody else on the front page that they are fantastic you will always receive a lot of flattering comments in return, regardless of the quality of your performance.

What that means, in practice, is that, some of the less able singers receive a lot more praise than some of the more talented singers. But that is human nature and common to all singing websites.

The amount of comments can be taken with a pinch of salt but knowing how many listens you got was the real deal.

Cheers

Roy

I am looking into options.

However, at this point in order to please the greater majority - we will continue to use the latest player which provides the ability to listen to submissions with any browser.

I have also had the site shut down on me a few times when I've played songs. This is random and have had it when I played my own.

It just happened a few moments ago too.. An Adobe Flash player message comes up and when I click 'continue' it shuts not onlymy SS page but any other screens I have open

Joyce, it’s good to hear from another person who has also experienced this problem…thank you for voicing it. …….…I’m sure there are many other members who have issues with the new player also. …NOW is your opportunity to come forward and speak if you want these things corrected.

I feel the most important item on a karaoke music site, is the player that the music is played on. We seem to have taken a huge step backwards with this one in regard to its features and functions. …….There are sites that even go one step further and offer their members the opportunity to upload “videos” if they wish.

I now have another item to add to my list concerning the “disadvantages of the new player”…AT THE MOMENT I AM UNABLE TO UPLOAD ANY SONGS TO SS.

Late Sunday evening when I uploaded a song to my profile on SS…my song wouldn’t work on the player. ….After trying repeatedly again on Monday, with no success, I finally gave up and decided to try another approach. ……..Using the “exact same computer”, I uploaded a song using my son’s free membership profile and password, and it worked??? ….As far as I know, I am the ONLY person who had a problem uploading a song during that time period.

All of this happened approximately 12 hours after posting this thread, I’m hoping it was just a coincidence. …..I don’t come into the forums very often because the main reason I joined this site was to sing, and listen to others sing, not chat. ….When I do come in here, it’s because I have an opinion to give on something and I believe that’s my right as a member on SS

Cindy, are you using IE or Firefox? I suggest you delete your cookies & history and try again? The new player shouldn't have anything to do with your isolated problem but I might be wrong

Just a few hours ago I tried to take a few listens on a lappy running XP pro (SP3). When I hit a sub it played for a few seconds, but suddenly SS blinked in front of my eyes and the browser (IE) shut down! I couldn't open IE or FF after that (until I rebooted). This also happened on two other machines at work. BTW, it happened ONLY when I started the player. I have Windows auto updates turned on on all my machines. I don't know what it is, but all seems well on this desktop (also XP, SP3)

I hope this might help the IT guys to fine tune the new player.

Ciao!
Ron

EDIT: I just checked the lappy and found that it actually runs SP2 (though with updates turned on), but this desktop has SP3. Both machines have all Flash updates done.

My player does not work. It is not even visible on most of the songs on the board.

My frustration level is off-the-charts.

HELP.........PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have come across another problem. .....2 songs on my 30 limit profile won't play anymore. Both of them were duets that I was quite proud of, and intended to leave there for awhile. One was done recently, Feb. 21, 2010 and the other in Dec..2008. .......I'm wondering if anyone else has had this happen to any of their archived songs?

Post subject:  Re: The New Player

Wow! That is strange?

Not certain what would cause your two previous submissions not to function??

This player is the best that I can provide for the ability to use cross-browser.

Everyone seemed to be complaining about the various problems caused by browsers not being able to properly select the default players.

Some folks were using Micosoft Media Player, Some were using Quicktime, and others were using real player. When the software was on your computer and set by your browsers there was nothing that I could do about it.

I did some research and found that there was a large amount of developers were using the google media player and were quite satisfied so that is what I have installed on SS

BTW - I am working on an option to upload and view videos - however there are even more problems with that...

Hi Phill, will we ever get our "views" back?

Post subject:  Re: The New Player

Phill, someone told me they couldn't play one of my older songs so apparently others are having the same problem Cindy mentioned. Thanks for continuing to try to make the sittation the best possible.

I am looking into other flash players - I will see what I can do.

The only way to restore the view count is to have it open another window. This was opposed to more people than those that wanted it.

Counting views will be removed as it was never truly accurate anyway as a counter, I have previously explained why.

I realize that I certainly can't please everyone although I am attempting to.

Changes happen all the time in everything. Look at one of the most popular websites out there, Facebook. They seem to modify their look what feels like monthly!

I will continue to research this but I am uncertain how I can fix.

NOTE: Please DO NOT Post links to other websites as this is a violation of the rules and gets removed by the moderators or administration.

I recently experienced the problem Kee mentioned... I noticed the player "wasn't there" on one of my older songs. I was on IM with someone at the time, and linked her to it. Although I couldn't even "see" the player, she said it played fine on her end.

I closed out my aol browser, opened up Internet Explorer, and the player was there, functioning normally. The next day I used aol again, and this time the player WAS there.

At least I'm having success there for the most part. But how come Cindy can't upload songs? I've been missing her on SS! :(

Each time I tried to play Bornsaint's "50 Ways" my IE just vanished off the screen. I deleted cookies and tried...same result.

Although I finally manged to play the song song using Firefox, there have been times even that has not worked. Luckily though, Chrome has helped when both others have failed. Since this player is said be be a Google product, I have a suspicion that it might actually prefer Chrome.

Kee, Cindarella...have you girls tried Google Chrome?

Have a nice weekend, you all.

The exact same thing happened to me yesterday! I went to listen to Tony Tiber's "One Hundred Ways," and when I hit play, POOF! I lost my internet connection! However, when I logged back on, my 2nd attempt worked fine.

Maybe it has something to do with songs that have numbers in them, lol.
