Ah another great Canadian reference. Stan was a great Canadian folk singer who spent much of his time in Nova Scotia and in fact StanFest is an annual festival held in my mother's hometown of Canso. Tragically Stan died in an airplane fire (as many musicians have) in Hebron Kentucky (Greater Cincinatti Airport), on 2 June 1983.

And here be the lyrics:

Oh, the year was 1778,
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!")
A letter of mark came from the King
To the scummiest vessel I'd ever seen.

(CHORUS)
God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold.
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears.
I'm a broken man on a Halifax Pier,
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

Well, Elcid Barrett cried the town
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!")
For twenty brave men all fisherman who
Would make for him the "Antelope's" crew

(REPEAT CHORUS)

The "Antelopes" sloop was a sickening sight
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!")
She had a list to the port and her sails in rags
And the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags

(REPEAT CHORUS)

On the king's birthday we put to sea
("How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!")
It was ninety one days to Montego Bay
Pumping like madmen all the way

(REPEAT CHORUS)

On the ninety sixth day we sailed again
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!")
When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight
With our cracked four-pounders we made to fight.

(REPEAT CHORUS)

the Yankee lay low down with gold
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!")
She was broad and fat and loose in stays
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days.

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Then at length we stood two cables away
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!")
Our cracked four-pounders made an awful din
But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in

(REPEAT CHORUS)

the Antelope shook and pitched on her side
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!")
Well Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the Maintruck carried off both me legs.

(REPEAT CHORUS)

So here I sit in my twenty-third year
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!")
It's been six years since I sailed away
And I just made Halifax yesterday

(REPEAT CHORUS)

timberlea, thanks for the historical note on stan and for the lyrics also! I stumbled on the video last year and thought it was an awesome song and the video was great too. It would make a great karaoke song!

edit: In fact in might be cool to have a karaoke sea shanties disc.

Driz, we know a guy who used to come to our MOnday show who had created a whole series of pirate songs because he was involved in a pirate (non-karaoke) group that did parades, etc. He did a really great job on them.

Karen, as a kid we had this Robert Shaw LP (now available on cd), and I think it put a bit of the roving seafarer in me...

Well I may just have to find that one. I am very intrigued by this music style. Have always enjoyed it. Grew up in Canada but on the west coast - part of our music education involved the music of the "other coast" -- sang a lot of the ditties as an elementary school student -- funny, they still come back to me now and then.
