Hi Guys, can anyone tell me the advantage of Karaoke DVD over CD+G? I have a JVC Karaoke machine that just doesnt like DVD discs and a Sony DVD player that doesnt play CD+G.

CDG is a thirty year old technology which appears to have been an after thought. The graphics information resides in the last six bits of the timing byte. The timing byte tells the player how fast the disk is spinning and this information is discarded after reading by many players. While the CDG format does conatin error correction it is based on finite fields and computational overhead is impracticly large to be done at run-time and so is not used on computer based players. As CDG is a 1 bit to 1 pixel format and the pixel output is usually dependent on the current pixel assignemnt, errors (artifacts) persist until a whole screen clear is called. Etc...

...and DVD's don't

Well the main advantage of CDG, you can get most karaoke music in CDG format, DVD is not as common for karaoke.
Your JVC player is just a CDG player most likely, which is why it doesn't play DVD.
Your Sony DVD player, doesn't have the CDG ability which is why it doesn't play CDG. There are some DVD players that will play CDG, I have a $30 MalWart special DVD player that actually reads CDG.

As far as playing both types of disc on a disc based show, cdg's are way better. You could cue up songs on cdg's without a monitor. Just push the numbers on the player. Before I went computerized, I found that DVD's you have to have a monitor to view the player to pick the right song. You use the up and down arrow, then the select button to pick your song.

Also, if you ever go computerized, cdg's are way easier to convert to a format you can use, i.e. MP3+G..

Karaoke CDG is currently the most popular format, Common contents of CDG´s are multiplex tracks, performance versions . Karaoke CDG´s can also be played in a regular CD player if you want to listen to the music. Lyrics are displayed on-screen when played in a karaoke player usually with a blank background. Almost all recent hit songs are made on CDG within weeks while other formats follow. And Karaoke on DVD is just like VCD but the audio and video is usually of better quality. This is because of the memory advantage it has over the other formats. Karaoke DVD discs can be played in regular DVD players which are used for movies but you may not have microphone inputs to plug-in to.

There's a bit to more to consider than just the technical aspects of the two formats consider.

Most of the foreign produced English DVD's have actual videos rather than "blue screens". And you might want to consider VCD's as well!
