Post subject:  Convert karaoke VCDs to DVDs

Hi. No success in finding answers from the Forums. So, have to bother you with my problem. I have quite a number of karaoke VCDs and wanted to convert them all to karaoke DVDs to save up space. I've tried "DVD Flick". It worked on the video conversion but not the audio. Would appreciate your suggestion on software, preferably free, that can effectively do the job. Thanks.

Why do you want to convert a vcd to dvd  You won't be saving space, a vcd is a regular cd (650-700Meg) as oppose to DVD where it's 4.7 to 8 gig for DL :!:

I think he wants to put 4 or 5 vcd's on one dvd, thus saving space for having to only carry 1 disc as opposed to 4 or 5 discs.
Not sure what program to use, could always do it in real time with a dvd recorder & play the vcd direct to the recorder.

You may try Karaoke DVD Burner. First you would have to save .DAT files from VCD to hard drive, then change their extension to MPG and name, and add such files to the project in Karaoke DVD Burner.

Sounds like Lonman's suggestion of direct recording is simpler, with less chance of errors, or loss of quality...

Just the opposite. When you copy DAT file, you retain the quality. Recording will change the original file. Also you will not be able to create the menu as you can with Karaoke DVD Burner.

My purpose to convert is, like Lonman's understanding, to put like 4 to 5 vcds in one dvd. I notice vcd files are .DAT files in MPEG form and karaoke DVD Burner appears to support only AVI files. I'll try it to see if it works. Thanks.

You can use MPEG files with Karaoke DVD Burner. It is not an official feature, but works.

Hope this helps:

I have a Zoom video camera that I use to make videos, for example, of my singers. When my wife outputs those files to the computer, they have the following AUTOMATICALLY generated file name "Zoom000_xvid.avi"

She then uses Nero to burn DVD's from those files.

With me so far?

Now, I just copied a ".DAT file from a VCD which was labeled "AVSEQ03.DAT".

I have a FREE program called "Any_Video_Converter" and I just used it to convert that file, having selected "Customized AVI Movie (*avi)" as the desired output format.

Once converted, this was the resulting output file name: "AVSEQ03_xvid.avi"

I believe you can burn the DVD with Nero utilizing this approach

Also note that this program offers several options for converting to MPG formats, but as noted in a prior post you can just change the DAT extension to MPG to accomplish that, but I don't know if you can burn a DVD using Nero for files in the MPG format?

Does anyone know the answer to that?

EDIT: Please note that preceding poster claims that while his DVD burning software doesn't state that it handle MPEG files, it does. So, that may be another solution. And if the MPG has to be converted to MPEG, the above named converter should handle that

MPG and MPEG is the same thing (MPG is file extension for MPEG files).
