A bit to the side of the topic.... On American idol, they used to make the person getting cut from the show sing the last song they sang, the one that got them cut from the show. Now they allow them to sing anything they want. Much better.

Personally, I say you always bring the big guns. If she nails that song, nail it again. If she has another which will hold the judges and audience entranced throughout, change it up.

Best is always better than good enough.

Are the judges the same?

What do the contest rules say. That would be the deciding factor.

as far as "Etiquette" ....IMHO... it doesn't matter same or different song.

Just don't be confused about the fact that the song that got her qualified may be a very strong song for her because she knows it extremely well or whatever ... and that another song may not, in the eyes of judges, be as strong. Be careful about choosing a different song but I am all for REAL singers who are able to perform dozens of great songs with equal skill, and choose the right song for the show. (Most contest singers don't fill that bill, however ...)

there are 3 or 4 songs that she does very well the one that got her in the finals was "Gypsies Tramps and Thieves " and she has been thinking about "White Rabbit " I thinks at least two of the three judges will be the same
most of the proceeds go to juvenile diabetes the winner will get some recording time from a local studio and some money (not sure how much ) so it's not like a big deal mainly for fun

Fun or not, if the Judges are the same, I would change things up. This has nothing to do with "Contest Etiquette." The Judges have already heard her sing this song, so now they will be pre-judging her based on her past performance of that song (whether it be conciously or subconciously). Based on that, she should be expected to step it up a notch and not repeat the same performance.

Personally, I don't like the karaoke ONE HIT WONDERS when it comes to contests. If I were a judge I would definitely takes points off for singing the same song. I would like to see a contest where each contestant would have to pick 10 different songs that they know and then a number would be picked at random to decide which one of the ten songs the singer would have to perform that evening. I think it would make it a little more challenging for all involved. Less likely to see Black Velvet get performed by 3 or 4 people in one night too.

Did a contest where one guy did a fantastic Philadelphia Freedom all the way through to the final.
By that time the judges decided they had overdosed on it.

I think it would be up to the singer themselves. If they want to risk the chance of the judges hearing the same song, and taking points off for it, then that is their choice. I am doing a contest right now, and we have only the finals to go. I am lucky in the fact that no one has wanted to sing the same song as another finalist. And so far, all of the contestants are choosing more challenging songs as they go. Just what the doctor ordered I guess.

I don't do contests but the only thing that I think might be inappropriate is to plan ahead and sing a song you know another contestent is likely to do, especially if it is not one you regularly perform yourself.

If it is the same crowd and judges as the crowd for the finals as the first round, it probably would help to show you can sing more than one song well, especially if the second song is a different style or genre of music from the first.

Last contest I did, I told the finalists to write three different song titles on three different pieces of paper. I had a neutral person pick one of the three - that was the song they got in the finals. And in fact, I did not tell them what it was - they stood on stage and when it came up they found out. Separates the wheat from the chaff. Better be prepared.

One of the places I went to had a contest, one of those things where you have weekly winners who then go to a final.

The format was two practice rounds then the contest round (we usually only had 10-15 singers at most). One fellow got up and did George Strait's I Cross My Heart for his first practice song.

When the second practice round came down, he put up I Cross My Heart. I'll let you guess what his actual contest song was. Sure enough, he was practicing. After that, the host made sure to tell people that they couldn't sing the same song more than once.

Although Bruces' rough edges rub a little badly, I agree with him. And one other thing, no one should be able to sing a song that's already been sung. At least that night. Everyone should have 2 back up songs, and then if two or more people select the same song, they slect a back up. Now as to who gets to sing the popular tune? Draw straws.

I lean in favor of the first person to sign up for the specific song, it encourages people to show up early. But I agree having two people sing the same song in a night is not what I like as a KJ especially in a contest.

On normal nights I encourage the second singer to pick a new song strongly, especially if it has been <2 hours since the first time. 95% of the time they pick something else, otherwise I let them go with it again.

I don't allow a duplicate song in a night, especially in a contest. Now if someone qualifies one night with a song & wishes to do the same song in the finals, could be an actual point against them as far as judging goes - if the same judges are used - as that just shows the judges that this singer does not know anything else.

A contestant singing the same some song in every round is like an artist including his top hit is every album he recorded.
