Tovmod, we'll have to agree to disagree here. Without customers you HAVE no business. My first responsibility is to the person who hires and pays me. The owner isn't asking something like the KJ perform in the nude or anything morally or legally reprehensible. I don't think because a KJ hosts a contest at the boss's behest reflects badly on the KJ as much as the venue.
As I said previously, I've had lots of DJ clients who make requests of me which I feel are not in the best interest of the overall success of the party. I certainly make my feelings known, but at the end of the day the customer wants what the customer wants. If for some reason I do not want to comply, that's my choice to refer them to another company.
Now let me get this straight. When you referred to "DJ clients", you were referring to people who have hired you to DJ at their event. Correct? Okay, then what is surprising about you wanting to satisfy a customer who is relying upon and paying you to provide them with an enjoyable experience. And of course you should try to dissuade them from doing something that may detract from their event. Would any paid entertainer do any less?
Are you suggesting, Dan, that a DJ's relationship with a bar owner is the same as his relationship with the person engaging him for a private event? I think not! And consider that if the person who engages you for a private event likes you, you may be hired again in the future, even if there are people at the event who didn't like you!
On the other hand, if the owner of the bar is a good businessman, he'll fire you no matter how much he likes your show if he sees that he has few if any customers coming in for it. So, no matter how much you are appreciated professionally by the owner, if he doesn't receive economic benefit from your efforts you are history!
And if you oblige the owner and do a contest that you are sure will drive away business, even if you told the owner that the contest is a mistake, when the economics dictate that he has to do something "else" you again, Dan, are history. And that's what you should expect for not managing YOUR business properly!
And as a KJ one doesn't have to have a wealth of experience with contests to recognize the downside of conducting one. And while I saw first hand, as a singer, the problems associated with contests, if I knew nothing at all about them before joining the forum, there are the insights and experiences of others on this forum that can be relied upon regarding contests. And isn't gaining such insights a primary reason for KJ's to participate here?
