I will be in the big apple this weekend for- http://www.bikenewyork.org/rides/fbbt/index.html While I'm there, I thought I'd check out the karaoke scene. Anybody know any good shows in Manhattan? Mojo |

I wish I could join you. I live in NYC, but I work in PA on the weekends (until July). I haven't done the Manhattan scene in ages, so I couldn't really say for sure which shows are good. Here's what I can recommend... Check out www.murphguide.com and look for the drop down that says New York Bars by Type and select Karaoke Nights. WARNING!!!! Sean does not update his site very often, so several shows listed are out of date. CALL before going. Avoid any show that might be listed which mentions Sexual Chocolate as the host. His was one of the worst shows I've ever been to. American Idle usually have good shows (all computerized... they don't play CDGs at all). T-Bone also has put on good shows (I don't know if he still plays CDGs or not). |

From the New York Post, here's an article about some of the current karaoke hotspots. One of the venues mentioned CHARGES $1 or more per song if you want to sing! |

One of the venues mentioned CHARGES $1 or more per song if you want to sing! NEVER go by a NY Newspaer article.... These reporters know absolutely NOTHING about Karaoke, and they just write about teh 1st place they may stumble upon. Most of the articles I've read (over the years) that talk about Karaoke, mention the private clubs that charge by the hour, or the places that charge per song. As for the mention of Wicked Willies (in the Village), I've never been there, so I can't judge them, but Winnie's (in Chinatown) has no rhyme or reason to how they operate their show. They take $1 per song, and then call you up at randomn. They don't even tell you who's up next. They just cue the song and play it, then call your name, and you have to run up to the stage. And, with so many places that don't charge you to sing, WHY would you want to go to a place like that???!!! |

Its been absolutely crazy up here. We were in Times Square when they found the car bomb. NYPD kicked us out and wouldn't tell us anything. I had no idea what was up until we got back to our room and turned on the TV. Never found any karaoke but I'm still having a great time. Today I've gotta go back home to Tennessee and see if my house washed away. Mojo |

See... you got to experience NY excitement first hand! So sorry that you didn't get a chance to sing anywhere while you were here. I wish I could have been off work, and I would have hooked up with you. Well, at least I get to meet Vikki 2 weeks from now. |
