I get it that vocal removal is nearly impossible...even though I do not need perfection. So how do I get a karaoke version of a song if none of the karaoke companies make it? Will they make a song by request for an inflated price? Will anyone make individual songs for a price? Am I just stuck with Elvis and the Beatles and Lady GaGa?

After looking for an answer for 3 years, frustration is a polite word for where I am.

Pay a band to record the song in a studio and use that as your backing track.

It's the only way I know of.

You could also get REALLY GOOD at making MIDI files, but that would take time and effort. And it would not be as good as finding a decent band, but it would be easier and less expensve. Really, if you have the money you could hire a band and a recording session, but you would REALLY have to want that karaoke song!!! I'd love to get home and dry by gerry rafferty, but it will never happen. Oh yeah and how about bus stop boxer by the Eels, can't I get a break!!

About 20% of curent songs can have vocal removal done pretty well. The vocals are never totally removed but are reduced by about 15db without much damage to the other music.

For another 20% vocal removal can be "acceptable" to most karaoke singers, but still have problems. (less removal of vocals, minor damage to other tracks).

For about 60% of the songs vocal removal is generally not going to work (including most tracks with effects on the vocals).

As for other options, there are a lot of backing tracks avalible in the UK that are not karaoke including many songs that have not been made as karaoke and you can sync lyrics yourself if needed (search backing tracks). There are also many bands that will create backing tracks of songs for a fee.

Supposedly you can rip songs from RockBand and Guitar Hero into backing tracks without vocals if you know what you are doing (I do not). This is going to be better than vocal removal because the tracks for these games are sold with separate channels for each vocal/instrument .

There are a few members of this forum that have gone the route of getting tacks made.

Are you requiring karaoke tracks with graphical display of lyrics included? If you only require the instrumental backing track, there are a number of professional backing track suppliers that may already have the track you need. Most of these suppliers can also create a custom track if they don't have the one you require.

Here's a few links:

I would urge extreme caution.

Licensing for karaoke is a labyrinthine (and largely thankless) task. I sincerely doubt it's worth the time, effort and expense for a single individual.[/i]
