Hello all,
I just purchased Power Karoake software and installed on my Gateway NV59 laptop. Laptop is running Win 7 Home Pro 32 bit. I have HDMI output with dual display support. I can get the Power Karaoke running fine with song audio and video out to TV via the hdmi. I purchased an external mic to connect to the line in on the laptop. However I cannot get any vocal output whether I use the HDMI or laptop speaker.

From doing some research it looks like the best solution is to get a mixer to run between the Laptop and AV receiver for the microphones. Is this correct?

If so Any recommends on Mixer under $100 that would work for me?
I want to basically go Laptop -Video-HDMI- TV
Laptop - Background Audio- Mixer - AV Receiver
Microphone(s) - Mixer - AV Receiver

This is just for home use, so I don't need a high end Mixer, but do want at
least 2 mic inputs.

Feel free to correct me if I am assuming incorrectly. :)

Get a yamaha 10/2 or 12/4 mixer. Should cost about $40-60 if you check craigslist, $100-150 new. Built like a tank, all the inputs you need for home use, best mic preamps you are going to find in that category.

Not the best solution, but what you have now should work...

control panel
hardware and sound
sound
recording tab
microphone\right click and set as default then to to properties.
listen tab\listen to this device box must be checked.
apply


not ideal but your mic should work.

Will these mixers allow me to send both the mic and laptop audio out via rca cables to my AV receiver? I ask as I purchase a Behringer MX-802 Mixer today, but it will only relay my Laptop audio as there is no "Out" for the mics via RCA outputs.

they are suggesting not running your audio through the a/v but through a separate mixer into an amplifier to speakers. I suggest that to as you aren't going to like the quality of using your mike inputs in your laptop either.

You will be more happy with a dedicated karaoke PA, you stereo is not going to cut it, at least it never has in my experience - have blown speakers & the actual receiver itself in one instance because no matter how much your karaoke may seem like a low volume experience, it always seems to want to crank up the volume a notch.

The answer is yes, you'll need an adapter if you wish to use your home rca cables

Micky speaks the truth. For $60 extra bucks you will sound a million times better.

Ok. I get what you are all saying as far as getting a decent mixer and amp. For now I am trying to get functional and then look to improve down the line. That is why I am using an AV receiver at the moment. One of you posted an adapter, but my question is still this unless I am missing something.. On the receive I have just the red and white RCA inputs. I see on most mixers I have the line in and out with the rca cables to go from laptop to mixer to AV receiver, but how do I get the mic out to go through the same set of rca out cables? bottom line is I am trying to get both the audio from laptop and audio from mics to go out over on set of rca cables to the AV receiver.

This is how I do it, though you can buy different cables to achieve the same thing. I use a cable like this to get from the 3.5mm PC jack to rca.

Then use an rca to 6.3mm adapter to plug into a stereo line in.

Any mic that will work on a pc soundcard isn't necesarily suitable for a mixer, so plug an appropriate mic (even a $10 Philips from Walmart will work, not that I'm suggesting you buy such a low quality mic) into a mic channel.

For connection to the amp, use more 6.3mm to rca adapters to connect an rca-rca cable.

You could also get a stereo 3.5mm to two mono 6.3mm cable for the pc to mixer, and 6.3mm to rca cables to connect to the amp.

I ended up taking back the mixer I bought yesterday and bought this instead. It is a Karaoke Mixer with built it 60 watt amp. Three mic inputs with some basic tone and echo controls. I can use all RCA in and out so this should work for my basic needs.

Ouch!

With the Yamaha mixer that was linked (which would sound much better than this HiSonic - not a good brand), all you needed to do was run the laptop into a chennel on the mixer, and the mics also plug into the mixer, then take the main outputs of the mixer to the amp source - in this case your stereo system.
This little thing you bought now might work, but am willing to bet you are not going to end up liking it. Plus it's only 20 watts, 60 watts 'peak' - most car stereos stock push more than that these days.
Anything that actually SAYS karaoke or made for karaoke usually isn't very good for most karaoke - but being this is only home use, it may be all you need.

Ok.. you convinced me. I cancelled the order for the Karaoke mixer and Guitar Center had the 10/2 on sale for 99.99. So I ordered one with 4 of the adapters. Let's see how that works.

Most definitely a better mixer, just know, that unless it has a CX at the end of the model, it will not have any effects for vocals ie reverb, echo, etc. This is something you can add relatively cheaply, usually can find a decent effects processor for under $100 used.

Funny you should say that. I actually switched from the mg 102C to the MG82Cx to gain the vocal effects. A few dollars more, but since it was for karaoke might as well get them. So much for me doing this without spending a few dollars on my laptop. haha
