Our crowds seem to STILL be stuck on:
BAD ROMANCE- lady gaga
SEX ON FIRE- kings of leon
PARTY IN THE USA- miley cyrus
- TOK- keisha
I GOTTA FEELIN- black eyed peas
...and all the older stuff.
Since retiring from deejaying, i hardly listen to the radio anymore and prefer live music 10-1.
Any suggestions on NEW SONGS that work well for a bunch of young'ns?
Thanks in advance! Aloha, -john

How young are the younguns?
Our new songs being done by the old coots are mainly country like Zac Brown and Lady Antebellum. All of the 4 available by Zac Brown get done nightly and they are eagerly awaiting "Free."
Little White Church and People Are Crazy are also done.
I was just about to attempt "Bad Romance" myself which will be the first anyone hears of it at the Dive. And probably the last. But I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of Shakira's version of "Waka Waka" just because I like to sing her butt shakers. SBI has it. For some reason, Shakira is acceptable to the cowboys.
We are adding another venue in August and may get a newer mix of songs done there. At our Boys and Girls Club show, the hot ones have been Itsy Bitsy Spider and Wheels on the Bus. Over and over and over ...........

No newer songs yet for me--but (speaking of Lady Gaga) I really really really really really really really really REALLY want to sing "Alejandro". Really. I went to a karaoke place tonight and they didn't have it. I haven't been karaokeing much this year, but I would at least like to do that song before everyone gets tired of it.
(no kidding--when I first wanted to sing "Before He Cheats", they didn't have it; and by the time I finally got a chance to do some more karaoke, EVERYBODY was singing it and I didn't care if I never heard it again)

Been doing " Uprising " by Muse which goes over well with the younger alternative crowd. For me it's one of the better newer songs I've heard in a while. Great live band.

Funny thing we get an avg 21-30 YO crowd and they still sing mostly rock from the 70's & 80's. Not a ton of 'new' songs. Feel it out & sing what you think will work or what you want to sing. We get a few 'new' radio hits, but those are not what dominates or really interests the majority.

This is actually one I have that I wish was done, more, it's an occasion with our 20+ YO crowds. And honestly the ones that HAVE done it were in their 30's to lower 40's.

We see the same thing at our place. The younger people do retro rock and the older people do Little White Church and Boondocks.
We are starting a new place in August and it may not be an old country crowd so I ordered Alejandro but will be surprised if it gets done. I also got Katy Perry's California Gurls because it seems to have a bit of buzz around it. I added those to a custom I already had to do for requests but won't add too many more new non-country until we see what the crowd requests. Just wanted to look on top of things if we did get younguns.

Alejandro and California Gurls both started to hit up in the last 3 weeks. Someone wanted Ke$ha / 3Oh!3 My First Kiss too!

I'm sitting here contemplating the question and here's what's ironic - I do a once-a-month kids' show and guess who sings ALL the new music I have? Yup, the kids - the 12-15 year old girls just oooh and aaah when they find new stuff in the book. Of course Justa Beaver is getting major time with them, as is Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, etc. Ke$ha is always sung.
As far as the adults, John Mayer's "Heartbreak Warfare" is a good one, (I'm duplicating post here, don't remember what thread I already put this in), Pearl Jam's "Breath" another. Anything Gaga is getting sung. I'm going to pick up Adam Lambert's new one and see what happens. Have a few guys who like to sing new stuff.
It's a crap shoot - I've tried to anticipate a few times and the songs go unsung. Like Lonman, many of our singers continue to sing Bowie, Journey, Bon Jovi, etc.

LL thanks for the suggestions! I will check them out today. My Young'ns or young guns as they are called here are my 21-30 crowd which makes up about 60 percent of the crowd most of the time.
My 30-40 YO usually sing Lady Antebellum songs and older modrock stuff like Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, or Pearl Jam.
Visiting tourists from NY and CA usually sing the here-today-gone tomorrow songs and hip hop stuff like Empire State Of Mind, anything Black Eyed Peas, or Rhihanna.
Most other tourists stick with the classic Journey songs, duets, and the standard Sweet Caroline, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Wannabe by The Spice Girls, and Piano Man by Billy Joel, on a regular basis.
Locals seem to like anything Lady Gaga or Alicia Keys but get bored with it pretty easy and the shelf life is only a couple of months before people aren't impressed or pay attention anymore.
I guess i've just felt so out of the radio music scene that a lot of new stuff has come out that's worthy, but maybe not. I really need to educate myself more on upbeat COUNTRY songs fer sure! ( I sing Need You Now and The More I Drink but that's the most recent for me.)
Laura thanks for that suggestion of Alejandro by Lady Gaga! Someone just happened to ask for it lastnite and i just found it on BKD dot com, AND Katy Perry's California Gurls.
vbu2c5 we DO have one girl that sings Uprising my Muse..maybe i should learn it. I always thought it was a females song until i finally heard the original on Music Choice cable channel the other day!
I put my Karaoke Kurrents update in the book a couple of months ago and we DO get requests on some of those songs, but they seem "old" to me now i guess. .
My personal choices past 3 months have been the Kings Of Leon Use Somebody & Sex On Fire, Dani California by RHCP, Black Eyed Peas old and new stuff, Flo-Rida's Low & In THe Ayer, and a lot of Michael Buble for my "mature" 2nd show where the average age is 55. Mostly older country songs are sung and a few Sinatras.
Lonman thanks for your input!
CK John thank you as well. I will look into your suggestions also today!
So far it looks as if i'm not THAT behind as i thought. My latest dls have been I Never Told You by colbie calliat and OMG by usher and will.i.am but the person that requested them has only tried them one time. Everybody else skips over them.

Thanks Karen! I will also look into that John Mayer, Adam Lambert, and new Pearl Jam..uh...JAM, !
I think both of our shows seem very diverse and ever-changing and updating...i just have been a bit lazy on keeping up and haven't listened to radio in months. Now it's live music as i'm getting involved with a band (classic/mod rock) and learning a few suggested karaoke songs on You Tube. Aloha!
Oh, and DUH, i've been blowing my throat out the past 4 weeks singing Hey Soul Sister by Train everynight at the end of the night...it just kills me!

johnreynolds, one other song that I do that seems to go over really well with the youngn's is The Killers - All these things that I've done, the middle part where he sings " I got soul but I'm not a soldier " often gets chanted by the crowd with no encouragement from me. It's not real new but it's rarely done by anyone around here and for some reason, maybe because the songs range is all over the place, I really enjoy singing it, kind of like Uprising.

The last disc update at one of my bars who insists on using their own music has JT's Sexy Back. kekekekekekekekekekeke... I don't even remember how long ago that was.
They don't want to pay me extra run my slightly more current discs/ tracks... and they wonder why turnout is reducing every week.
URGH!

Yeah, the more new music they can get, the better. I finally found "Alejandro" at the 3rd club that I tried. As I said in another thread, I sang it tonight and it went over well.
edited to say: And I haven't found it since then. I was actually calling karaoke places tonight to see if they had it. No dice. Sheesh. One of the few times I actually want to sing something current and they don't have it yet. Not that there aren't other songs I want to do--of course there are many--but I'll admit that sometimes I get obsessed with certain songs, and this is one of them. Just the song, though, not the video. That was a bit too weird, as were some of her performance clips that I saw on YouTube. But the song is so darn catchy--it practically sings itself. (Does that make sense? What I'm trying to say is that it's easy to sing along with and nearly impossible not to.)

Heh heh, those would be fun! Well, maybe not if you heard them over and over...
My son used to love to sing songs like that. He's 12 now, and what he mostly likes to do these days is to hum little tunes off of Nintendo games! It's so cute--we'll be in the car and he'll be going "doo doo doo" and it will be some song from some Mario game or something similar. He loves to play video games (well, so do I, but he REALLY loves them) and also likes to talk about them and draw pictures of them!

*grin* Where do you live? (BTW, I've only heard part of "California Gurls", if it's the song I'm thinking of, and I don't recognize the 3rd title you mentioned.)

None...... i subscribe to chartbusters country, and pop hits of the month. But most of my customers prefer the older music. They don't like what's out there right now.

The newest song I have tried is What About Now by Daughtry. Couldn't pull it off. My range is higher than his.
