Stumbled upon this site completely by accident.. and after reading several of the threads here thought, "Hey! It's NOT just me!" I've been a DJ/KJ since '98, and have been involved in bands (guitarist/singer) since I was old enough to get into bars. What originally started out as a way to put my PA system to work when band gigs were scarce turned into a full time job for most of those years. That put me somewhat at odds with many of my 'band only' friends and like minded people i've met over the years who are convinced that it's DJ's and Karaoke that put their bands out of work. I consider myself an entertainer first.. and regularly incorporate other elements into my 'shows'.. like twister competitions and jello wrestling. Anyway.. that's me. Looking forward to having a place to 'talk shop' with other karaoke hosts and DJ's. |

Welcome. That's actually the first time I've ever heard that one. Don't even see them as close. I have seen bands going to karaoke looking for new singers, but never a complaint of stealing their thunder |

While I personally agree that karaoke/DJ and a band are two totally different entertainment options, seems like i'm always running into some band guy about how they loose work to Karaoke and DJ guys. One guy felt so strongly about it, he put up a website: http://karaokesucks.net/ Let's face it.. a KJ can come into a bar for half (or less) than the average band charges, and the KJ/DJ will appeal to a much broader audience. My answer to the band guys is if they'd keep their set lists current, and maybe actually put on a show, they'd have a stronger appeal. |

You're right, Cheese. Kj,dj cheaper. But I always thought they attracted different crowds than bands. Not a fan of bands myself. And don't go to that location on band nights. |

Well I'm personally not a fan of karaoke (at public places that is) cause nobody really listens to you, they're all busy getting drunk, talking & screaming their heads off & just waiting for their turn to sing & could care less bout anything else. Now when you're in a band, the people are there to listen to you & give you their undivided attention. I do agree bands are much more expensive than a KJ/DJ but you get what you pay for. My hubby is in 2 bands & they're booked up the ying yang for the next year or so & they do cater their music to the venue they're playing at whether it be current music or whatever the preference. I've always been a band girl myself & highly appreciate the musicianship that goes into it. At least here at the Showcase you don't hafta deal with all the nonsense of the loud drunkin' crowd. |
