Post subject:  Getting Started!

Hi,

Me and a buddy are starting a karaoke/dj business, and I had a couple of questions,

We have the DJ equipment, and I have my laptop, I was wondering what is the best CDG Compatible software to download, so we can hook a television up to my laptop and load CDs onto my laptop so we dont have to deal with changing Cds after every song.

Also, I'd like to know where the best place to go for the actual CD's, in terms of quality and value.

and am I right in saying any small portable TV will show the lyrics as long as we have the proper cables and it is hooked up to the computer? Also,

I use a PC, and I have only seen people using MAC's to do this, will my Pc work as long as I have the correct CDG Software?

Thanks again, and any feedback is appreciated!!
Bob

There are more Karaoke softwares for PC's than for MACs.

www.tricerasoft.com
www.mtu.com
www.karaokeware.com
www.roxbox.net
www.powerkaraoke.com
www.pcdj.com

are just a few sites that have programs for the PC.
My suggestion is to first figure out what you want in a software package.
then test the demos of each software to find out if it meets those requirements.

You can follow this link to find out more about hooking up a monitor to your computer.

Buy from the manufacturers websites or their retail partners.

I use karaoke.com to buy my discs. Once you become a repeat customer, they will send you 5-20% off coupons MONTHLY to help pro KJs build their library. They are also one of the larger sites out there, so they have most everything you could want to order.

When you first start buying CDGs, you may also want to hit EBay to get a few big starter sets. You should be able to build a good starting library with about $1200-$1500.

eBay has been my main source and helped me keep cost down. At this point, I won't recommend manus but large starter sets will get you a great start for less bucks.

You won't want to load cdgs into your laptop for very long. Much easier during the show to have them digital so you don't have to handle the disks.

Yes, from the Cavs download page in the middle of the page there is a free sample song download. http://www.cavsusa.com/cdgdownload/index.htm

It is in the standard zip format that most hosting software will read, only thing different agout the songs from Cavs is they also include a third "mcg" file within the zip-this is for their software, so pay no attention to it, most all other hosting software only needs the 2 files (mp3 & cdg) withibn the zip file.

I use Compuhost by Invicion. Only songs downloaded in the MP3+G format will be compatible with most pro-level hosting packages. The best bang for your buck is still to buy the discs and then rip them to the hard drive. THere are a lot of good starter packs out there.

Also consider Sound Choice mp3g set for kj's
http://www.soundchoicestore.com/gem-ser ... pg-59.html .
Already ripped at 320 bps for most all of the hosting programs. It's not an illegal drive, you get physical discs licensed to you in mp3g format. If you get the entire set would run aprox $4500 for 6000 (non-dup'd) song titles. One of the best deals out there right now and the music is pretty much the best you are going to find in a complete set like that.

Not too many programs will actually play CDG's directly, MTU Hoster is one, I believe Powerkaraoke has that option & I recall Winamp has a plugin that allows that feature, but I have been told from several not very well if the drive doesn't actually have CDG ability. The other two programs will usually read a dg disc from most any DVD drive.
You do need a karaoke program like mentioned above, I do not believe most computers will just read CDG discs - I could be wrong.

Will us new b's need to purchase a digital tv or will any tv work?

Post subject:  Re: Getting Started!

You can make just about any TV work, the newer digital TVs with a vga input only require a vga cable from your laptops vga out to the vga input on the TV (I guess I assumed you were using a laptop here)
Using an older CRT TV will probably require a converter to make it work.
More info on your computer video outs and the video inputs available on the TV you want to use will allow for reccomendations on exactly what you will need to make it work.

Just depends on the computers video output and what the TV has for inputs. Most TV's old & new still have at least coax connections. Most laptops video output can be converted to that connection if needed.

Autokdj wasn't mentioned, so I'll mention it. It allows you to que up songs from a web browser, so a smart phone (like an ipod/android) can que up songs for you. It has several revisions of a kiosk apps that run on PC hardware. All contained within a winamp plugin.

and it's free.
