Someone just told me that MP3+G was what everyone was going to (vs. CDG). As I am just producing my first album, I have to ask why. Is it just to save disk space? I don't like the idea of distributing the soundtrack and slideshow as separate files...it seems like it would just make it easier for someone to steal my backing tracks.

It's just the format that most Software based karaoke players use that format. The only exception being MTU's Hoster.

Even in the CDG format the graphics have nothing to do with the audio. There is no reason to use one format over the other in so far as piracy is concerned.

Why? You can't put a CDG on a hard drive.

Besides if someone wants your backing tracks all they have to do is play the CD in a conventional CD player. Presto: Instant backing track.

Than just save the file into a bin file  CDG Ripper will rip in bin and you can use Microstudio to read them

I understand that some people are going to rip them and steal them that way, but if the sound is on the Internet, in .mp3 format, there are spider bots that can steal it and distribute millions of copies all over the world, in the time it takes to make a single mouse click. I'll have to look into this some more, and see how the other companies are handling their distributions.

The majors that do allow computer useage are using mp3g format ripped at 192-320 primarily. Some of the overseas manus use video, Chartbuster uses a video file as an option as well if I recall.

You are right.

Millions of copies of your tracks.
Which are copies of someone else's work.
Will be distributed over the internet.
Enjoy.

Unless you can create a full list of products to meet the need of the kjas you are going to have to follow the formats other people are using. No kj is going to run one system for 1% of the songs and another for the other 99% unless those 1% are very special.

If you intend to sell your songs as karaoke, you are going to have to distribute them in a familiar format, and that is pretty much MP3+g or CDG. Most pirates would find a way to steal your songs if they want them regardless of format. Once it is covnerted then it is open to the world. If you sell in anything but MP3+cdg you can sell your karaoke songs to the fans of a specialty fan base but not to the karaoke community in general.

Cds or CDGs are just as easy to steal. Stick disc in computer, rip. Presto instant digital music.

bottom line, if someone REALLY wants to steal something, they will find a way no matter what you do.

guess what you need to decide is if there is enough of a legitimate market to make it worth while
