Someone asked me this last night...how much would I charge to make a custom CDG disk of the song that he wanted.

Because the costs can vary so much, I didn't have a quick answer, but I'm interested in knowing what the market will bear. Assuming that a karaoke version is not commercially available, what would you expect to pay for a single-user copy, CDG or MP3+G, download or disk, it doesn't really matter. Assume a sound track that is of moderate difficulty to produce, no award-winning guitar solos, but sounding as if it were done by a live band with some talent.

Keep in mind, this would be for a singer, not a KJ, not licensed for distribution. What would be a reasonable range of cost?

I would probably say in the $20 - $25 range for a song that isn't available elsewhere.
Guess it depends on the person and how bad they want to do that song. I once stated that I would pay upto $50 for a particular song...but it would have to be a quality product...no midi or vocal removal...would have to be made with a backing track. That desire for that particular song has waned somewhat so I am not sure my statement would still be true today.

$25-$50 for me.

And speaking of that.....
I would be willing to pay $$$$ for anyone to turn Moon Dog Mane's "Sweet Southern Sound" into a Karaoke track. Don't need the CDG lyrics, just the song with vocals removed completely, and no MIDI. Any takers, I got $50 burning a hole in my pocket.

Difficult questions. For custom discs, manufaturers charge $3-4 a song, from their existing libraries. As for producing a specific song not done, that would depend on the number of buyers you have. For one buyer, by the time you pay all the appicable fees, musicians, and other business costs, plus a reasonable profit, could be in the thousands.

I did pay $60 for a Toby Keith song that was my wife's favorite about 4 years ago. It never was made in karaoke, even to date. The $60 was JUST for the sound track. I still had to make the CDG and synch it myself. I felt it was a bargain after shopping around.

I have a list of songs I would like made, but unless I win the Powerball that ain't gonna happen.

I would pay $20 each for a good quality MP3 backing track of otherwise unavailable songs if someone has a keyboard workstation (like a Yamaha PSR 900) and the talent. Hint Hint

I think the cost would depend on how many musicians you needed to make the disc. Something one guy could do by layering a guitar, bass and drums would be a lot different than doing a Sinatra tune or something from a broadway musical that required an entire pit orchestra.

Which Toby Keith song was it? Can you sing it and put it up on the Singers Showcase?

Bruce,

It was "She Only Gets That Way With Me" from his "How Do You Like Me Now" album.

I'll see if I can make some time in the next few weeks to record and post it. I'll PM you if I do.

I look forward to hearing it. I think I tried to remove the vocals on that song a while back without much luck. ;c(

THERE ARE ONLY ABOUT SIX PERSONS THAT I KNOW OF WHO HAVE THE
SOUND MODULES TO MAKE A COVER VERSION (EXACT MATCH MUSICALLY, TEMPO, KEY, AND SONG LENGTH) OF A SONG. THE GOING RATE IS FROM $ 75.00 TO $ 250.00 WITH ABOUT 6 WEEKS PRODUCTION TIME. (JIM (KJZONE)

Here is a place you might try. I know nothing about them, but they sound at least somewhat honest. If you have them do something for you, I would be curious to know how it came out.

http://www.mycustomtracks.com/

The most I paid for a backing track was 500 euros, about $640, and that included the rights for me to distribute it. Tency Music in France did it for me, and that it was a really great job...a much better reproduction than most of the tracks they already had available.

I paid 200GBP back in the 80's for a rather good Midi track.
No backing vocals.

Don't know how that would be at todays price.
It was for a singer doing the circuit.

Well, I have just recently (almost 6 months ago) paid $80 for a song (about 3 minutes in run time) to be made up for me (with graphics) ("Back When My Hair Was Short" by Gun Hill Road). I am still waiting on it from the person who placed the order for me, so I can't tell you if I feel it was worth it. Once I finally get it, if I do like it, I will probably be willing to spend a little more for a Frank Zappa song (an 8 minute song) called "T*****s and Beer."

In 2006 I contracted with Chris McMartin of Mountainboomer Music to make the track. His website is http://mountainboomer.com/rates.htm and the licensing is with Harry Fox Agency http://www.harryfox.com/songfile/public/publicsearch.do. $30 + $30 was the cost.

The file was MIDI, and like others have said before they USUALLY don't have the same quality as a band reproducing the song, but Chris is amazingly talented and his reproduction was very close to the original. I also have Myriad's Harmony Assistant software to "tweak" MIDI files to my liking and then export to MP3.

Recently, I have found that better reproduction can be made on a keyboard workstation like the Yamaha PSR 900 and very quickly.

I still have a Korg 05R I got back in 95.
It still sounds great now.
Yet everything released over the last 10 years
is much better.

I like to play the original soundtrack, but not all the instrumental bits. Including Death Murder fits the game very well. What I did was make a custom soundtrack RDR. And as the above post. Not sure of your Xbox, but PS3 can press the PS button and select Rip Music tab. If the PS3 is a computer network, you can copy music from your playlist in Windows Media Player, or simply turn off the computer, PS3.

Cueball, your song will be done this week. As soon as I get it from the studio I will start on the graphics. Thanks for your patience.
