I have a very basic rotation of songs that I sing. that give me the best reactions but I am looking to expand my song selection I cannot hit high notes and my signing voice is kinda scratchy and loud.. But not to the point where it is annoying. My Ace in the Hole: Mony Mony - I can get a good reaction to this song, but it is a bit redundant of a song Others: Wanted Dead or Alive You give love a bad name Smells Like Team Spirit Livin La Vida Loca (LOL, yeah I know) As you can see I like uptempo songs.. I have tried songs like American Woman and failed miserably. It has the right pitch but the tempo just kills it for me. |

Why not try some soul like "Papa's got a brand new bag" by James Brown. Or try "Who's makin' love" (to your old ladie) by Johnny Taylor. Rosario |

Can you handle John Cougar Mellencamp--like "Hurts So Good" or something like that? "Smooth?" We have a singer who sounds like he might have the same type voice and his repertoire includes: "Jack and Diane," "Little Pink Houses," "Hurts So Good," "Gimme Three Steps," "Brown Eyed Girl," "Life In the Fast Lane," "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and "Legs" (ZZ Top). Others could include Nickelback, if you like more modern. Also "Money For Nothing," "Light My Fire," maybe some Johnny Cash or Hootie and the Blowfish? Don't know what era you like, if any. Actually Jam is correct on the practice thing. I had very limited abilities starting out but was determined to sing some songs I really loved. It took about 3 years to get one but once I figured it out, it opened up a lot more possibilities on things I could do and learning new ones comes easier now. |

I reiterate here - PRACTICE! I think it helps if you have songs that you really enjoy singing - those ones that live in your head that when they come on you know all the words quite by accident. And if you're not happy with your range, work on increasing, up or down. |

Maybe some Steppenwolf...Born To Be Wild comes to mind. You might get some advice from a vocal teacher about improving the voice. That's what people keep telling me, but...do as I say and not as I don't do? -denise |

I'm confused though, because some of the ones mentioned at least cross up into the break area if you' can sing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" where it's written, you should have a lot of songs to choose from. If you're singing them down an octave well then it's another matter. If you're singing them down an octave, then try adding "The Humpty Dance" "Wild Thing" by Ton Loc Rolling Stones songs-- Mick Jagger doesn't get up so high Bruce Springsteen -- "Pink Cadillac" is a piece of cake, but it's fun and you may find some others you can pull off as well. If you're really hitting"Smells Like Teen Spirit" where it's written then hey... try some Creedence Clearwater Revival Counting Crows -- Mr. Jones in particular |

I recommend starting with artists you already sing. Look at other Bon Jovi and Nirvana songs to start with. Then look to similar groups for inspiration. It helps to know your range... and limits. For example, if you have a 'deeper' voice with lots of gravel, you can likely do some Rob Zombie. If you have a 'gravelly' and deep voice that's pretty smooth - Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino and even some Sinatra tunes work well. As you get higher, groups like Guns and Roses may work - they're fast, Axel's voice wasn't quite so 'smooth' and it may fall into your range. It all depends on what you can do with your voice... |
