Post subject:  Powered mixers - Yamaha EMX 512SC or PV XR8600D?
I would like some advice on which mixer is better for Karaoke:

I have the EMX512SC and would recommend it to anyone who is in need of something compact and easy to use that will get the job done.

Thing is, I know Peavey makes something similar and I wanted your thoughts on which is better and why- so I can give my buddy an unbiased opinion.

The Yamaha gets my vote in pretty much every category.

The only advantage I see to the Peavey is that it's got a slightly more powerful amp. The Yamaha has compression, a better effects unit, and is just better quality in general.

I've used a lot of Peavy gear over the years. It's certainly very capable equipment in most cases, but if forced to choose between the two, i'd still reach for the Yamaha every time.


Of course, if I wanted to buy something in that price range, i'd spend the extra $50 and get the Mackie PPM608 that blows 'em both away.

Same EXACT unit I use and you can't beat it for small to medium venues.

another Yamaha vote. never had a failure from any of my Yamaha gear, and the sound is great. Nothin wrong with a Mackie, but the Yamaha has the compressors which are a nice touch

The Mackie actually has compression too -- and better from what I understand.

Yeah, the Mackie has everything the Yamaha has, plus some.

The only down side in my opinion on the Mackie is there aren't individual channel mutes, just a break button that mutes all the mic channels at once.

As to the onboard effects.. neither unit has reverb that'll win you any production awards.. but both are very capable, and i'd say are on par with one another.

I just really, really like the way Mackie preamps sound.

Mackie sounds tight and precise to my ear, but i like the warmth of Yamaha Pre's. i don't think you could go wrong either way right now. the mew Mackie does have some great features, haven't heard the new effects engine myself, but i dig the tap tempo option. (Ya listening Yamaha?)

I only use the Nady DKW Duo's because they're $40 for two with free shipping, and work great for drunks who think just because the mic is wireless, it MUST be better.. that and everybody at my shows who uses them likes 'em.

Of course, my booth mic, as well as my two wired singer mics are SM58's.. although the wired singer mics are rarely ever used.. to the point that I don't even plug them in anymore.

I started out with the EMX512 and I still have it as an emergency backup because of it's extreme portability, but a mixer and separate amp will give you better sound IMO. The vocal effects on my Alesis Multimix 8 USB mixer are much better than the effects on the Yamaha. You won't find a more rugged and reliable piece of gear, but mine is for sale and I won't be going back to a powered mixer. They're convenient, but in the case of the Yamaha the overall sound/effects etc. just doesn't compare. Maybe other powered mixers have newer internal amps with low hiss and better vocal effects.

Haha.. guess the quality board makes the cheap mics sound better than running the cheap mics into a cheap board. ;)
