Post subject: | New laptop question |
Does anyone have experience with an Acer Aspire laptop? Not for karaoke, not for recording, just for internet, etc. ? They are pretty dang cheap (please don't say "you get what you pay for")... compared to other models. And I really don't need anything fancy, but at the same time I don't want one that is going to fall apart. My current Dell laptop (Inspiron E1505, about 4 years old) is literally falling apart, to the point I'm about to get out my duct tape. The back is diconnecting from the base on one side, 3 of the keys have fell off, the battery is now junk and has to be plugged in to be on.... so, I'm shopping this week. I'd like a super nice one, and would love to get a Mac like I've been wanting, but this round it's going to have to be a lesser model. And I want a smaller version.... no need for me to lug around a huge one. If anybody is familiar with those? Thanks in advance. |

Acer is a decent brand, and has OEMed quite a few for other manufacturers. I own two, one regular Laptop (Aspire AS5251) and a netbook (Acer Aspire 1). |

I saw one while browsing around at Costco the other day, it was the 10.1" for just under $400. (maybe that's the Aspire 1 you are talking about?) If so, is the keyboard comfie size? (i have pretty small hands anyhow) I don't think that one has a cd/dvd drive though, and I don't think I want that left off. Well, and then again, maybe I don't really care about that- I rarely use them these days anyhow, flash drives are a bit more convenient for transfering music, imo. Thanks for the input;) |

I'm typing at you on one now. I've dropped it 3 time from a goodly height and spilled beer on it twice. It gets my vote. |

Cool. I'm not hearing any complaints, and for $400.... I think I'll go ahead and grab one. It's definitely going to be a huge improvement over the current laptop. I'll check it out a bit closer when I go there, but it's the best deal for what I need that I've came across so far. Hoping it has an integrated cam too. That's the kind of laptop (and cellphone) I need to have... something that I don't have to treat like glass. Thanks for your input. |

So far I have only replaced smashed displays on them. I repair laptops. Not had a problem with any Acer. |

Just for alternative, I just got this one 2 months ago for my kids and they seem to be pretty good as well and $239 if it's just for internet & some basic processing tasks - comes with XP. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... 6&CatId=17 |

Thanks for the input;) No, the 10.1" is not really useful for normal work. I use it for something to stick in my car as an emergency connection mechanism. (I have to be able to get online at most any time because of my business.) I recommend a 15" or better if you plan on spending any time with it. I just bought the 5251 on sale at Amazon for 379 shipped. That's an excellent deal for 3G RAM and 250G hard drive -- it's my new karaoke laptop which I will also use for my travel machine. |

I have used all the following laptops for home internet use, word processing, spreadsheets and Karaoke at some time or the other. Used an Acer Travelmate 4000 for 3 years. 512MB RAM, 80GB hard drive, celeron. Worked like a charm. upgraded ram and hard drive and used it for another 3 years until it got stolen 2 weeks ago along with my other acer latops. Also had an Acer Aspire 5740G and a 5741 as my backup. Never had issues. I mistakenly hit one off stage with the head of my guitar, it fell off my desk, off stage and onto the floor. beleive me that is a good drop, and it survived with only minor damage. I would recommend one for live use as they can take quite a beating. Never had any issues. The Dell 15 series or inspirons are not as durable in my experience. I hope this helps. Vic in Sydney |

I have one of the Inspiron E1505s you have, as well as an HP and a Toshiba. The Dell is on it's last leg as well. As long as you have the right hardware (good processor, etc), the Acer should be good. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean bad when it comes to laptops. I'd avoid netbooks, though. |

Acer at one time was the OEM for IBM computers.. (and others) but IBM sold the business to Lenovo.. Acer owns both Gateway and E Machine brands.. as well as producing the Acer desktop and laptop models.. The higher end Acer laptop are quite good.. Keep in mind, most builders simply design the case, as Intel or AMD produce the chip sets, and Seagate or Western Digital sells them the hard drives.. and so on. Motherboard builders produce the guts, (Per design) and Acer has them assembled.. I support this message.. |

Well, after making the mistake of walking into Fry's (where there were WAY too many choices)... I got a Gateway LT31. It's a mini, but not quite as small as some of the others. (11.6" screen) I liked the keyboard better- it's very comfie, and it was the only dual processor mini. Works for me. I need it for browsing the internet, but wanted to make sure I had SD slots (maybe they all do now?) and an integrated cam, and it has all that. Should have never went there and just bought online... I ended up buying a new desktop as well, and a bunch of cd's just because they're vinyl. http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668744.php (now that I've made my purchase, please don't anyone tell me any bad things about the Gateway) |
