Hi Guy's
Any recommendations for a decent headset mic.
I have never dealt with them.
It is for a young woman that sounds similar to Amy Winehouse.
At the moment she uses a Shure beta 87.
Trouble is she keeps backing off the mike.
Can't give her volume when she is a foot away from it.
She refuses or forgets to sing into it.

This is one my drummer had - same head gear older receiver, worked great, did need a little eq'ing on the channel (as most any headset) plus you will want to dedicate a compressor to it (again as any headset).

I use the Countryman E6 for announcing/talking (not too good for singing).

I use the Crown 312ae for singing at times when I’d like to look cool holding a prop guitar walking around the crowd. Although it has been discontinued, it can still be found at ebay. Great headset, lots of gain before feedback.

Crown end connector is a TA3F mini xlr. If you have a Shure beltpack cut the the end and replace it with a TA4F. That's what I did on mine.

Jerry,

I use the Samson Airline77 system, light, no belt pack and no wires. Makes it easy to turn on and hand to a singer.

It's only single channel but it's great if you don't have anyplace to hook a belt pack.

i have used a crown ca311 and it rocked hard, sounded awesome, but a bit pricy.

Apologies in advance as this might sound rude, and maybe it is, but...

Why buy a new mic when the one you have is just fine? Is there some reason you have to cater to this girl who can't (or won't) learn and use proper mic technique?

I don't know what the rest of your audio chain is like, but the beta 87 with a decent pre is enough to get good results with any competent vocalist.

I know what you are saying.
She is family.
I think a lot of it is confidence.
I simply don't have the heart to nail the beta 87 to her mouth. :D

I am looking closely at Karen's Airline 77.
The no wires and belt pack option are a big bonus.

Ah, I see. Objection cheerfully withdrawn.

In that case A headset might be just the thing. I've used the Shure pg14/pg30 and it sounded great. A little pricey, tho...

I take the mic level only so far, then the singer is on their own. When/if they comment on how they sounded (or didn't sound) I remind them that they will sound better when they sing into the mic. I've really gotten to the point where I don't care if they have a problem with it. The regular singers know exectly why the sound is the way it is.

Yes I fully agree.
I am trying to help my niece here though.
Sort of changes things.
Not long ago had her first baby.
If I get the sound wrong...
I may be wearing strange things.
Chairs, beer pumps. You get the drift.

I'm no expert, but from personal experience I had the same problem with one of my friend/singers. My friend had very bad mic technique. I solved it by putting a set of headphones on him and let him hear what is coming out of the mains. My friend could hear himself singing to the music in his own head, but was not hearing what everyone else was hearing. It took a few songs, but he finally understood that he needed to sing into the microphone. I'm not sure if having a good monitor would have done the same thing. Since this is a family member, spending the extra time and effort would be a good thing too. Just my two cents.
