I've been known to put in a late bid or two on ebay, but this guy is relentless. Seven seconds left in the auction, without fail, this guy will put in a single bid and miraculously win the aucton no matter how absurdly high the auction is. I saw a used copy of Sound Choice 8272 that sold for $270. If anyone has actually outbid the guy, I'd love to know what his "magic bid number" is. It seems as though he puts in an amount that even he would be unwilling to pay, as a means of paying just a dollar more than the highest "semi reasonable" bid goes.

Of course the sellers have no problem with this method, as they get the second highest bid amount +1. For the buyers, however, there's no recourse to counter a guy who has no intention of paying $1000 for the auction, yet bids that high as a means of securing the win.

In all fairness I use ebay for almost everything.
If I badly want a thing I will put in a high bid.
Simply depends how much you want it.
I usually bid in the last seconds.

What makes you think this guy would not pay?

Well it is wrong of me to insinuate that someone wouldn't pay, however he's never had to put more than one bid in, and it's always with 7 seconds left. Maybe he's using a snipe program. In any event it's terribly frustrating when you put in a bid WAY OVER the going bid and your bid is eclipsed with 7 seconds left. This leads me to believe his bid is excessivley high.

I think it's time for ebay to evolve as other bidding programs have: extend the auction when a late bid is entered.

There are sniper programs out there.
I think ebay has one.
Don't know much about them.
You enter your maximum bid
and it will automaticly place your bid in the last seconds.
A lot of people use it.

I know what it's like though to but in a high bid
and get beat.
Not often though.

I sometimes wonder if the seller (or one of their friends) is buying their own product to push up the price in another auction a few weeks later. Nothing more than a suspicion but sometimes I wonder how rational the prices are....

With the recent prices on SC disks it can get scary, and I dont see myself ever doing that until im less than 10 disks from a full set of the spotlights.

I will pay $35 on some disks but $100+???.

It just is down to bragging righs of owning a full SC set.

I still need 322 of the 916 spotlight disks. (but 230 of the ones I need are country).

I have all but 86 of the non-country spotlight disks, and my average price is around $17. Some of the ones that recently sold for >100 on EBAY I found on some other sources for far less (under 25).

I know there's the argument that "proxy bidding" is meant to minimize the effect of sniping, as in theory everyone has an opportunity to put in the highest they'd be willling to bid. I just wish ebay would realize that they stand to earn additional money by opening up the "last bid" to everyone that would like to participate.

One day when I have $1000 burning a hole in my pocket, I will put in an obnoxious bid with the hopes of finding out exactly how high this snipe bid is.

$270 for that disc? That's nuts. In all my years of being a KJ, i've not ever had anyone ever request any of those songs, besides Black Hole Sun.. and I could count the number of times it's been requested on one hand.

Either that person has more money than good sense, or they're a shill bidder running up either their own auctions (under a different username) or for a friend.

Talk about a "filler" disc.

I think we are dealing with a "collector" phenomenon here.

The concept of a complete "collection" is far more valuable than its parts...

For example a 20 volume encyclopedia missing one voume would be worth far less than 95% of the price of a full set to many who own such a thing.

If someone owns many or nearly all of the SC disks the last few missing ones (that are truely hard to find/obtain can reach the obsession level).

From personal experience 90%-95% of the SC discs (including the out of print ones) can be found for under $20-$25 if you are patient. About half of those discs can be found in the 10-15$ range or less if you search well. But spending more money can make the search a lot faster. On the other hand 10% or so of the disks are really rare, and almost no-one will have them.

If the person is down to the last 10-20 missing disks from a full set, then I can see spending $100 or more per disk, because they are 99% "done" with the collection.

For the songs themselves however no the disk is not likely to be worth it.

A shill bidder would bid with enough time to be outbid.

I suppose there's just high demand for OOP Sound Choice in North Dakota.

I've got quite a few mediacloq SC discs that I'm probably going to put on E-bay. I haven't sent them back for the unprotected ones, and just out of principle I will sell them and get the song titles out of my books.

7 seconds is very beatable.

Sound Choice should be paying attention to this thread and the auctions on eBay. Seriously, think of all the revenue potential hear if they went through the necessary steps (whatever licensing and other items are needed) to re-release some of these songs/discs. I mean if the prices of these discs are being driven up because they're so hard to find, SC could make them easy to find, and get all the revenue for themselves instead of watching it blow around in the used market.
