Post subject:  Which ones do it for you?

Some time during my show, things might tend to slow down, so what I'll do is insert myself into the rotation (if I'm not already in it), and do something up-tempo. Currently the 2 songs I use are "Get Down On It", by Kool And The Gang. I prefer the Top Tunes version. GUARANTEED to get the people up and dancing. The other is "I Can Dream", by Dan Hartman. Again, GUARANTEED to get the people up and dancing. Are there any songs that YOU, (or someone at your show) sings that when it is sung, the dance floor fills. A while back I was on a Madonna kick, and would do Vogue, or Like A Prayer. Maybe we can exchange some ideas for those slow moments in the show. I don't play (DJ) dance sets, so if I want people dancing, either someone else has to sing it, or it's me. I'm not talking about some song that is a "new" dance hit that someone sings, (or tries to sing), and NOBODY gets up, because the song was MUTILATED, but a song that you know as soon as it is keyed up, the people are on their way up to the floor. Please share!!!

Older crowd. For us it is still "Smooth" and "Hurts So Good" both done by regulars. Boyfriend will do "Sold" if things need perking up. It isn't a favorite of mine but I have never been to any show where "Mustang Sally" didn't fill the floor, even if the singer just stares at the screen and let's the music play.

Once I attended someone else's show and a young wedding party ventured in. They wanted to hear something "younger" and I had "Just Dance" with me. Never had such a reaction before--hooting and hollering and a rush to the floor with arms waving and all sorts of excited carrying on. It doesn't work at the Honky Tonk, however.

Depends on the show and the crowd. Sometimes a good ol' country standby like Family Tradition or Never Even Called Me By My Name will do it. In young potentially rowdy crowds I'm certainly not above whipping out Crazy B!tch as a way to get things going again. American Pie is always a good one because just about everyone can sing along with at least the chorus portions so I'll often use that one to get people involved. Cecelia or Brown Eyed Girl will often do the trick too. Like I said it all depends on what kind of crowd I have that night.

Oh, and Sweet Home Alabama. Interestingly enough, the younger crowd goes crazy for it....

I'm fortunate that a lot of my regular singers let me pick their songs. I get some pretty long rotations and prefer not to sing, so it makes it easier to keep the mood up. Some songs that I pick for them Brick House, Pour Some Sugar, Cowboy Baby, Holiday, It's My Life, Obla di obla da, You Can Call Me All, Sweet Home Alabama, YMCA, Ball of Confusion, Funky Music, Smoking in the Boys Room, Mustang Sally, Lady Gaga, Black eyed peas etc.. It depends what's on their lists. I have everything from 20 somethings to 80 somethings in the bar.

That song drains my will to live, I seriously wish I could remove it from my books. But if it works, you can't argue with success.

Believe it or not......I get tons of requests to sing Walk the Dinosaur. I can't get over how this song gets the crowd onto the dance floor.

E U's Da' Butt is another one that works for me.

LOL! Perfect!

But You CAN remove that song. I did. Along with a handful of others (5 or so) that I refuse to listen to (PBTDL was NOT one of them. I sort of like jacked-up versions of that song, actually) and I was much happier, believe me!

I'm not even convinced it cost me anything, but if it did it was TOTALLY worth it to not have to listen to people (pretty much universally) mangle songs I hate when performed well.

I once confused it with Get Low by Lil Jon & the Ying Yang Twins. BIG OOPS!
But I do have two singers that do Low (Flo Rida) VERY well and they get the crowd going with it every time! Very high energy! I'm generally not into that style of music myself, but when these guys do it, it's very enjoyable!

Crazy B!tch, Mustang Sally, and Pour Some Sugar on me.... I just wish someone at my local place could actually *sing* them.

Diafel, hang on to your hat -- a singer girlfriend and I did "Get Low" a few times and it was hilarious. I have Low by Flo Rida but nobody sings it- hey prefer for me to just play it and they dance -- usually at the end of the night.

If I want to liven things up I will sing Barracuda or Crazy On You by Heart - for some reason those songs just get people riled up. Oh, Run to the Hills by Iron MAiden is usually a hit, as is anything by Journey, and Jet's "Are You Gonna be My Girl"which I change to "Guy." I've been singing "I get Off" by Halestorm but it hasn't gotten a very good reception - low recogniton I believe. Just ordered "According to You" by Orianthe as some of my young (kids' karaoke) singers are asking for that one...mmmhhh.

For me to get the dancefloor filled: "Superfreak" by Rick James & "Mambo # 5" by Lou Bega.

For line dancing: "Boot Scootin' Boogie" by Brooks & Dunn and "Fast As You" by Dwight Yoakam.

Depends on the crowd if they are into a more pop/hip hop or rock and country. The latter hardly ever dance to it at our show but will be up dancing to Bodies - Drowning Pool or Walk - Pantera. You just never know what people are going to dance to. I worked last Saturday night & the dance floor did not stop (to karaoke only) literally they were dancing from everything from Johnny Cash to Metallica.

I've found Don't Stop Believin (Journey) to be a great tune for getting people going. If its a little later in the evening I might break out TNT (ac/dc) or Run to the Hills (Iron Maiden).
