Hey Guys.
We have worked out that the Host, the atmosphere and the bar prices are bigger than the sound.
Most of you have already stated why you are good.

Who amongst you are willing to say you are lacking.

I will start.

I have fantastic sound.
Great lighting.
I'm a sh!t host.

Really good though with drink.
Sadly I have to drive home.

Er Scotty.
You have already turned me into a fly once. :D

the first step is admitting you have a problem eh? :lol:

great sound
decent selection - have some big holes to fill in it.
horrible as a host.

i definately need to improve on being more personable to the heavy drinkers. once they get drunk, stupid and annoying, i get a short fuse. thankfully i have my wife there to buffer it, but to be what i want this company to be, i need to fix that.

1. I'm terrible at charging what I'm worth and making money.
2. I'm obsessive about knowing my trade and can become condescending to people who throw around misguided information (I had a customer tell me he was so efficient that when he hosted he had 83 singers on stage in four and half hours - I quite quickly pointed out that his singers must have ALL picked 3 minute songs possible to do but not on a single JVC player when discs have a 1sec-15sec delay at the start). Lord help you if you tell me a version isn't very good.... the phrase you are looking for (unless you are singing off a backstage disc :D ) is "This is not the version I prefer".
3. My equipment could be better (see point 1)
4. I work a lot better when I'm drinking red bull.
5. I stand stationary at my own show when I sing, where as in reality I'm quite capable of leaving the stage and engaging the audience (especially since I do a cabaret show) but I feel that it would like I'm showing off.
6. I sing along in the background which can be off putting to some customers.
7. I have a low boredom threshold. If you sing the same songs week in week out (despite advice or encouragement from me and the other members of the audience) I will go out and smoke, go to the bar, look for a kick (@$%&#!) filler track, sit with customers. . .rather than listen.

I am:

* Excellent sound
* Very good mics
* Reasonable selection
* Friendly, lots of patter
* But tight-assed

I think my biggest downside is that I don't really let loose with the drunks, and I tend to favor the singers over other people in the place. But actually my biggest downside as a host is that I can't do it - my wife and my partner won't let me. :? Maybe when I retire...

Famous? Cue up "Mr. Cellophane"...

Flaws? Moi?

Equipment is decent, but I'm still learning to use it better.
Compuhost occasionally kicks my @ss
I'm not very good at marketing myself
I tend to be too nice to drunks initially which leads to more conflicts some times since they think they can get by on me.
I'm a bit uptight till I have a drink -- then I relax and do a LOT better
Selection is all legit, but it's below average in size for this market

I could probably go on and on, but anyway thank God for you guys and gals and the chance to pick your brains.

Great sound
Above average song selection
Hosting abilities - getting better all the time but there are areas of improvement I feel need working on (I can be a bit too serious at times)
I know I have to learn to loosen up more (but carefully)
Many of my singers come and shake my hand and tell me good show before they leave. Not only does that feel good but it also inspires me to improve.

To be honest I only do 2-3 karaoke shows a month-by choice-It keeps the "job" aspect out of it and keeps the fun ever present...I actually look forward to each and every time I host...I want to keep it that way.

Flaws

I need to go out for a smoke sometimes - I don't get a break for 5 to six hours.

I get stressed when dealing with to many people in the bar and many of which are out of hand drunk. I was so stressed out last night I couldn't sleep. Although it doesn't happen that often I wish I could learn to brush it off. I'm good at hiding my feelings - always smiling and looking like I'm having a good time not to alert others that are having a good time somethings wrong. I actually had someone say to me last night," You love your job". If they only knew how I really felt at that moment.

Crappy sound, blown out speakers, 8 CD+g disks.

I spend way too much time signing autographs.. :roll:

Of course this is just MY opinion.

I have great sound

My song selection is nearly 5 times what it was when I hosted my first event but still has a way to go (about 10,000)

I banter with everyone, I'm friendly to all, yes there are a few forced smiles there.

I think I mix decent but I know I could be better.

I'm dependable. I've never been late for a gig and I always communicate with those who hired me.

My biggest weakness? I suck at remembering people's names. I tell myself again and again that I should memorize (I'm a world class memorizer hence my 3.844 gpa, not cuz I'm smart) but I'm also absent minded and forget.

My biggest weakness is definitely on the personal side. I have a really hard time approaching people cold in a bar. Trying to find a way to interrupt their conversation to interject myself without being annoying or just blown off is something I really struggle with. I'm trying to force myself to do more of it rather than always just talking to the folks I know.

I also have to admit I am terrible with names too. People are surprisingly forgiving of this but it frustrates me. I try to repeat names in my head while looking at them so that hopefully I can remember some distinct feature about them. Sometimes it works sometimes it does not.

The only thing that has ever worked with me on names is using the name in the first couple of sentences of conversation after meeting them. When I meet you, I try to say something like "It sure is a pleasure to meet you, Tony. Are you from around here? Say, Tony, I know someone from Oshkosh." If I can do that, I rarely forget.

My sound needs much improvement. Giant hanging speakers amongst the ac ducts in the ceiling don't sound very good.

Hosting is good but personal interaction is waining. burning out a little of the young'ins maybe.

I always make it a point to check on all of my mature singers and ask if they need anything or what their opinion of the show is and what can be improved upon. Mostly they say everything is great and they had a good time.

I do play upbeat filler music between singers and probably always will to keep the energy levels up. I no longer do dance breaks because business is really improving despite inferior sound.

This has always been tough for me in every day life, but when I do karaoke I have no problem. The only reason I think this happens is because the majority of my singers have odd or funny karaoke names. It's so much easier to remember an odd name then a common name like Bob, Dave or Sue. I encourage karaoke names as much as possible. If I have more than one Bob I'll go to the second Bob and ask if they have a nickname they can use instead to avoid confusion. I never settle for just the first letter of a last name for instance. Boring LOL

As many of you know I keep index cards for my singers with their most sung songs. I'll write down spouses and girl/boy friends names on them also if they don't sing, so I can remember their names. If someone doesn't sing I can't remember their names.

I do have some singers that use nicknames, I never really thought about encouraging it and making it a strategy, I might have to try it. Right now some of my regulars are "The Dagger", "Pig Destroyer" (which I usually announce with a huge amount of reverb and delay on my voice), and "The Four Skins" (a group of four golfers).

One host we have in our area seems to remember by putting Mr. or Miss in front of the name. I am Mr. Mickey, my wife is Miss Jeannie, etc.

I about fell off my chair one night when he announced "Will Mr. Butt-crack Bill please come to the stage..."

"WOULD YOU STOP FLIRTING WITH MY WIFE!!!"
"Certainly, which one is your wife?"

I think this is an example of my biggest failing as a host. I just don't see it as a job. I set up, do a sound check, start drinking and schmoozing. I am an evil old pervert having more fun than anyone else in the bar. I haven't been fired in the middle of a gig yet but sometimes I think I should have been.
