I had a rough weekend. I had to deal with every bad type of personality there is. (Pushed, Grabbed and yelled at) The Friday and Saturday from he!!

Usually anytime there seems to be a fight ready to happen I call for a bartender or the owner. In a really bad situation I say it over the mic. I made a bad decision Saturday night.

I was introduce earlier in the night to what seemed to be a nice girl who was one of my regular's daughters (who does not sing).

Towards the end of the night the daughter was arguing with an older man close to the stage. Her father's girlfriend was holding her arm back from hitting the man. I said Betsy are you okay( the girlfriend of the girl's father). She yelled no, help. I rushed down and simply told the daughter," Please don't do this. Your Dad is so excited that your here tonight. Lets keep this a nice memory for him". She shoves me half way across the bar and starts coming after me. Now this is a large 30 something yr old woman. :o Thankfully Betsy held her back long enough I was able to get the bartenders attention.

I learned my lesson! Never get in the middle of what seems to be a fight. Usually one of the guys who is a regular would step in, but being it was a girl no one was going to the rescue. Girl or guy it is the bartender or the owners problem. I'm staying out of it! Dumb dumb dumb me. You can never reason with a drunk.

They left shortly after and the father said he would talk to his daughter and apologized for her that she was really drunk.

To the bartender and owners defense they simply did not see what was happening.

I've dealt with a lot of crap through the yrs, but this takes the cake.

Yes unfortunately, especially in today's litigious society, as a public facing business owner you're better off staying out of it. She could have hit you ten times but the one time you took a swing back at her she'd have lawyers all over it seeking damages.

Your story also reminded me of a situation that occurred a few years ago in our area. A guitarist, who I was loosely acquainted with, was in a bar where two 60-something guys got into a fight. He got involved and tried to wrestle them apart. Somehow in the course of the fracas, a bottle was broken and cut deep into his hand. As I'm sure you've guessed, he's never been able to play the way he used to. Physical therapy has done wonders but he just doesn't have the ability he used to.

My strategy in this situation is pretty simple. Call for a bartender and protect my equipment as much as I can. But I'll even let them destroy the equipment before I will put myself in the middle of their stupidity. I've got insurance and in the end it's just not worth the potential risk.

Sorry to hear about your situation, glad it didn't turn into something worse for you.

I know this guy who is also a KJ. He did something very stupid that cost him his business. A drunk and he had words during the course of the night and it let only to a pushing match. But the drunk actually grabbed one of the hosts speaker on the stand and threw it to the ground, pulling the cable. The speaker broke, and pulled the cable tight enough to pull the ends out as well. Well, the host went off the deep end and beat the holy crap out of the drunk. Broke his jaw and put him in a coma. The drunk was simply charged with disorderly conduct (when he finally got out of the hospital) and the host was sued for ALL expenses, lost his job, went to jail for 6 months, and was forced to stop hosting. Simple rule... A piece of gear is replaceable. Had the host just simply had the drunk escorted out and arrested, he would have had been able to replace his speaker and cable much easier than spending 6 months in jail.

Lesson here. Simply think rationally when confronted with someone who is thinking irrationally. 2 irrational people just don't mix.

Unless you are properly trained, stay out of it. Even if you are, it is the staff's responsiblity for security. You do not know what the other person's mood, capability, or even if they are armed. If it is that bad, clear out and call 911. You're equipment is not worth it.
