Some posts on another thread made me curious about how others on the forum handle payment for their gigs. Here is how I do it: * regular gig, cash every week * sound hire for bands I do regularly, cash at the end of the night (no deposit) * private parties, one-off events, etc. 25% - 50% deposit at booking, remainder due by check 2 weeks in advance, or in cash once the gear is setup * weddings, 25% deposit at booking, remainder due by check 2 weeks in advance, or in cash no later than 1 hour after the reception starts |

Bar gigs is cash only, due at the end of the night. If they don't pay, I don't go back and I've only lost one night's pay. Weddings, private parties, etc is a non-refundable half down to secure the date. The rest is due at the end of the night. Depending on circumstances, I may accept a cheque, but I definitely prefer the cash in hand. |

Cash or checks - in 20 years only had one bad check. I get paid weekly by check at my current show. Most of the bar gigs i've played in the past usually paid by check, there were maybe 3 that actually wanted to pay by cash. Haven't done a private gig for a while, but I can also accept Visa/Mastercard (and PayPal) via PayPal. |

I've found that cheques are looked on quite differently here in Canada vs the States. In the States, I've found that most people regard them almost the same as cash (ie: good). In Canada, they are more or less regarded as suspect (ie: bad), unless they are from a large corporation or a long standing local business. I think it may be because so many people have been burned by them. When a cheque bounces, the recipient gets burned twice. Not only are we out the cash written on the face of the cheque, but we also have to pay bank fees for a bounced cheque, usually around $25 per. |

Bars - cash at the end of the night Private parties - cash or check at end of gig - it's rare I'll do them any more unless it is for a friend or good cause. |

* Any public Karaoke/DJ gig for a bar or club (i.e. No Contract) - cash only. * Private party or other contracted Karaoke or DJ gig - 50% Non-refundable deposit upfront, remainder due once I've setup; cash or check for both payments * Weddings, Karaoke or DJ - 50% Non-refundable deposit, remainder due 30 days in advance; cash, check or charge for both payments * FOH or Monitors hired by band - Cash Only * Full Production hired by band - Cash Only * FOH or Monitors hired by venue, promoter or production provider - Cash or check * Full Production hired by venue, promoter or production provider - Cash or Check (also charge but only for venue if it's a long term placement/install) * All studio work (recording, mastering, printing, etc) - Cash or Check Ultimately it's like this. If there's no contract, I want cash, period. With a contract I'm usually willing to accept checks too. Charge is only a last resort and only in specific cases where I know I have time to make sure I have the funds in hand before the gig. |

For my regular bar gig, 4 years running now, I bill at the end of the month. It has never been a problem and for this particular establishment I don't think ever will - under current ownership that is. Private parties, weddings I get $100 deposit and the balance the day of the event. So far have never had a problem here either. |

Bar gigs -- a handshake, cash and bar tab... Weddings - I ALWAYS use a contract! 50% non-refundable "Reservation Fee" upfront -- a "reservation fee" is NOT the same as a deposit legally, so it's not refundable. Using the term "deposit" in your contract can cause problems in some states so "reservation fee" is the way I roll. I accept checks or cash. Payment IN FULL due upon setup. Tips optional at end of the evening, but always welcome... I give a 10% discount if the entire fee is paid in full 30 days before the wedding day. I find most folks like to get that discount and I sleep real well with that money sitting in my account. Private parties, I use the same contract and financial arrangements as weddings. |

I'm a lot more flexible on the deposit and payment before setup if the person booking the party is someone I know, or a regular at one of my bar gigs, etc. I don't like checks. Not because i've had a problem with them being bad.. but because they're a pain in the (@$%&#!). Deposit them in your bank, wait 3 days for them to clear or for the funds to be available.. or go to the bank it's drawn on, have to show 2 forms of I.D., then get charged a teller fee for cashing the check at the bank. That's if the bank will even cash the check. I've walked into some banks that have signs that say up front they do not cash checks unless you're one of their customers. |

Here they HAVE to cash it if it's drawn on one of their customer's accounts, as long as you have proper ID.

Bars can pay any way they choose. My corperate loacations pay net 30. They are submitted a invoice for every night we work they have 30 days to pay the invoice with no late fees. Applebee's is net 30 but the manager pays on his store AMEX nightly. Friday's pays via check at he end of the month for the entire month. My local bars one pays every sunday with a check for their 2 days. Most of the others pay cash at the end of the night. One time event bar customers under contract are required to prepay. Schools and Universities are not required to pay deposit and may pay by check or credit card day of the event. Private parties under $500 in price have a $100 deposit and may be paid in full on day of event, Private parties over $500 have a $200 deposit and must be paid in full prior to setup. Private parties over $1000 have a $300 deposit and must be paid in full 7 days prior to the event. Weddings have a $200 deposit. Must be paid 7 days prior. |

The gig I am doing now I accept check because I knew them long before I started running it for them and that is how they paid the previous KJ who was a friend of mine and lobbied for me to take the gig. Otherwise it is cash only. |
