I was curious what everyones pat response is to the singer that doesn't want to wait to sing and thinks they should be able to sing before their turn. This is my first go to statement.

I usually say this is a karaoke bar with a lot of serious singers. They know when I go out of order and will hang me from the rafters if I don't keep it fair. It's like waiting in line at the grocery store. You have to wait your turn.

Similar too yours, I use the phrase that we always call singers up fairly and in order and the 14 singers waiting already know this. Whilst I would lose in a fight with anyone, I stand more chance if I saying no to you, than with the other 14 if I said yes.

My response is " Sorry, everyone has to wait their turn".
When they keep bugging me, I just say "no". Nothing else.... repeat as necessary. They usually go away after that and don't bother to ask anymore.
Part of the reason people like my show is because I won't play favorites and move people up. For anyone.

Pretty much the same thing here. Me being a pretty big, hairy guy, most people can be a little intimidated by my size. So i dont usually get any grief from people, especially the singers. I really think this is one area that being a man is a bonus for being a host.

Pretty much something to that effect.

What I think is funnier than anything is when they come up and tell me i've been waiting over 2 hours to sing while so & so has sang twice now before me especially since we've only been running the show for about an hour 1/2.

I use a board so that everyone can see who is up with respect to the other singers.

I point to the board and tell them if they get permission from everyone listed, then I'll be happy to... 8)

I have a KJ friend who actually posts a sign on his table that says "Please don't ask to sing out of turn". I've thought of doing this as well.

We got that the other night but they had just had their turn 2 singers ago. They were so drunk they forgot they had just sang. Actually, I don't think it was drunk. People kept commenting that someone had evidently run over a skunk nearby.

My wife has a great response to that, she says "I'll see what I can do". Usually people look dumbfounded, and walk away.

Haha.. depends on my mood.. but i'll usually just kind of nod at them or give them some variation of the "I'll see what I can do" or "I'll look into that" phrase.

Sometimes if i'm feeling frisky, i'll tell them, "I'll put you up next, but you gotta sing the song I pick." and then if they accept the deal, i'll put 'em up for something jacked up.. like a big burly guy singing 'Karma Chameleon' or have an older woman sing Danzig or something.

The most common excuse I get for people asking to sing out of turn is "I have to leave soon, so can I sing next?"

I explain to them that it's my job to keep people in the bar.. not facilitate their early departure. If they're telling me they'll be leaving after they sing their next song, well, then if anything, i'll be putting their slip to the bottom of the pile!

I was never that lucky.
It was always the landlords family that wanted to sing late.
He always paid more when that happened.

I usually put up this sign at the start of the night. Works very well:

Here's an idea for those who would like to use a more "hands on" approach.

When someone asks you to sing when it's not their turn:

First, explain that the equipment and software have been programmed to follow the rotation and if interfered with, may cause undesirable results. Then say, But we'll give it a try.

Of course prior to starting the night, and in anticipation that this would happen, you secretly rigged a mic to give off an electric shock, with every 5th word sang into the microphone.

Now, just hand the singer the rigged mic and let the fun begin. I guarantee they won't ask to go out of turn again. :D

You could just keep one of those small tazers on hand, and when people come up and ask you stupid questions, you just zap 'em in the nuts.
