Just wondering here, but,,, I found a guy who has been attempting to sell a pair of older model Carvin 15" 3 way speakers. They are the 1503's. He originally started his price out at $575 for the pair. I emailed him and told him that he basically was up in the night, and that I could purchase a pair of the new line for less money brand new. The new ones are lighter, more power, and only cost $279 each new. Ok, long story short, he has come down on his price to $395, and says he is not coming down any farther. I believe, even if they are in pristine condition (which they are), that they are only worth about $375 dollars for the pair, which is about 60% of the cost of new ones... I don't NEED these speakers, but it would be a nice addition to my set up. Was just wondering your guys thoughs...

Thanks in advance.
Scott

Nope, not even gonna make an offer. Like I said, I don't NEED these speakers, so if I decide to buy them, they are going to be the price I want to pay. I was just curious if anyone else felt the same way I do about paying for used gear. I feel that 60% of retail is MORE than generous for used gear. This guy is really not in a hurry to sell them anyway, he has had them listed for about 2 months. And it really wouldn't bother me a bit if someone snagged them up for his current asking price.

I guess I could also ask the techies on how they feel about these speakers,, Here is the link. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad ... d=&search=

Not worth more than 50% of new cost. The new ones are probably lighter and have better drivers. you might want to pass on these especially since you don't really need them. $279 for a brand new 3 way speakers with 15" woofers is an excellent deal. I've been considering Carvins for some time now, but I have more speakers than I need. What I need to do is sell of some of my old gear so I can keep buying stuff, it's fun . . .

I don't pay anything over 40-60% for used equipment. The only exception might be if the item is less than a year old. Otherwise, no way.

By sticking to this rule, I can almost always SELL my used equipment for within 10-20% of what I BUY my used equipment. The only thing that sucks about this is that it is not for the impulsive. You have to have the patience to wait on deals. You have to find people willing to deal, and you have to be able to properly test equipment to keep from getting any duds.

But, yeah, if you can get good, working speakers at 60%, then take good care of them, you'll get most of your $$$ back when you decide to sell them down the road.

That's just good business!!

By the way.....there are a couple completed auctions on Ebay for these Carvin 1503s, and it looks like the average sale for a pair is $399.00, so you're right on on your asking price. There is also a Harmony Central review of these speakers where many bass guitar players state that these are good cabs for a bass PA, and compare them to the Yamaha S115Vs, so I'd say they are good backup or mobile rig speakers.

I'm an addict, no denying it. I love getting deals and I have way more mics, speakers, powered mixers and cables than I could possibly use and all of it from ebay or craig's list for a fraction of what it would cost at retail.

Joking aside, I need to sell my (2) Yamaha EMX512 powered mixers and some speakers to someone who needs a cheap PA system and free up some space in the garage. I could use the cash too. I'm toying with the idea of getting a used Bose to play with. I'm beginning to think that the ease of setup and transport might be the way to go for me. I NEVER would have thought I would even consider it, but I am . . .

mrscott, do the speakers sound good and look professional? One thing to watch out for when buying older speakers is if a previous owner replaced the original components with non-OEM repair parts, which happens often with speakers. Another is that Carvin is doing a better job today with passive crossovers than in the past; and that is very apparent when listening to old vs new Carvin products.

Also, are these speakers really going to be useful to you, and a good fit for your jobs? A $300 brand-new Carvin speaker that weighs close to 100 pounds flat out sucks compared to a $500-$600 brand-new JBL speaker that weighs 40 pounds and takes up a third of the space in your vehicle. Replace "JBL" with many other brands and the story is the same. You might be much, much happier with a small, super-portable speaker that actually sounds better, but costs a bit more money.

Jeff, you are correct with your statement. No, I don't "NEED" these speakers at all, I just think they would be a good addition to my system down the road. The new line of the LS1503's are only 58 pounds each, and should be a good choice at only 279 bucks each. The used ones I am talking at, weigh a bit more, and I don't know much about them, (I haven't seen them personally). The guy who is selling them thinks because he paid a lot more for them years ago, that they are worth more than they really are. The price has come WAY down on Carvin speakers in recent years. And they are build well still. I probably won't be purchasing the used ones, it was just a thought. Thanks for your input.

edit: I just looked again at the ad,, he lowered the price to $350..haha.. I still won't be getting them tho.. :)
