Hi all. I am pleased to have found this forum and have just joined. After having read through most of the posts, I am unable to find the info I need so here goes. I want to do some charity work, eg in "old age homes", karaoke for seniors. My view is that I do not need an expensive, hi-tech system, so I bought a Behringer Xenyx 1202 FX mixer -- after having read many reviews, most of which have been favourable for this little mixer. So . . . has any member of this forum used this mixer for karaoke . . . ? I would appreciate any feedback from you experienced guys. Oh my music is on a laptop, and I have a small amp, speakers and everything else. Just have'nt tried going through the mixer yet. |

If you got it set it up at your house and do a run through as if you are doing a show to get the feel of it before taking it out to the old age homes and stuff. That way you aren't looking like you don't know what you are doing. I held some private parties of my own when I was starting out and was glad I did. The volume you use at home (thinking being neighborly) should be the levels you would use at an old age home. |

thanks so far for the two replies. Yes, I certainly would look like I don't know what I am doing . . . because I don't. Not yet anyway. I will give it a shot before going out. thanks. |

Sounds like you have a home theater receiver and home theater speakers, correct? Otherwise you would not have been able to previously get any sound out of a PA amp and speakers without a mixer. A home theater receiver is really the same thing as a mixing amp. It is a pre-amp and amplifier in one. Adding a PA mixer to a home theater receiver is going to give you a bit more flexibility and upgraded microphone preamp, but isn't going to change your overall outputted sound that much. As always, the VOCAL part of karaoke is live music, and while it does not REQUIRE a PA system to actually get a sound, the dynamics of live vocals require a PA setup as opposed to a home theater setup at higher volumes and energy levels. If you are not happy with the sound of your current system, you may want to look into upgrading to a PA amp and PA speakers. Just adding a mixer is not going to fix much if you are running it into a home theater receiver. |

I used it (One of the horror stories here cause mine broke 1 year and 1 week after purchase ) and frequently saw other peoples settings on the same desk elsewhere. Between me and the others the vocal fx tended to be either 2/4/87/88. Apart from reliabilty (which is the most important factor for me). It would be a well suited mixer for the task at hand, and certainly allows room to expand, should you at a later date which to add in other equipment to your set up. Well worth having a play at home, and investigating all what it does. I personally would suggest investing in a pair of headphones so not to disturb your neighbours, and having a play. Then hire a hall (or find a carehome that will let you use their day centre when it's empty) and get a feel for the live sound and ajustments you may wish to make. |

If you use that mixer for Karaoke your speakers will explode, your ears will bleed and everyone will hate you for being a cheap and crappy host. sorry I'm kidding of course, just figured I'd add to the perceived panic that everyone has when they see other people downplaying the quality of these brands/models. The mixer will work fine. Using home stereo amps and speakers, will work but it requires a careful hand and an understanding of how they differ from pro PA speakers in order to avoid damage. Good luck, have fun. |
