Me and my girlfriend are planning to put together a CD for Christmas of ourselves singing some of our favorite Karaoke songs, but neither one of us has decent recording equipment. I went out and bought a USB Microphone, but it sounded like junk on the recordings and for some reason my soundcard does not like USB microphones (so I need to find an input jack one if I go that route). Does anyone have any suggestions on what we should buy?

I'm thinking a good Mic would be all we need, I have Adacity for recording. I'd be willing to go up to $100 if I need to. I also have the problem that I sing off-key if I can't hear myself, so I was thinking maybe I should buy a Headphone/Mic combo, but maybe my speakers would suffice if the Mic will play through them (the USB one did not).

I could also try buying good recording equipment and going to a private karaoke booth.

Any suggestions? Ideas?

Thanks!

Buy a hard disk recorder not a computer program. The cure for off key singing is PRACTICE!

What kind of mic did you get? If it's like one of those little Logitech handhelds, then no, it's not going to sound good.
I've got some pretty decent results with Audacaity for live recordings, but there are much better that will work for studio type recording - which is what it sounds like you are after. This way you can record a track and record secondary or more tracks to 'fix' the off key singing by re-recording that portion on another track until you get it right. Then just copy & paste the section over the original bad section leaving the rest of the track alone - so no need to record one song OVER and OVER until you feel it's right, just fix the bad parts only.
