Question for anyone who may know: I have 2 small cameras that also have video. I've tried catching clips of live music on them (both karaoke and band) and the little bitty mics just aren't up to the noise.... the recordings are very distorted from the music being loud. Does anyone know of a good, small camcorder that works well for recording live music? I don't need it for anything other than grabbing clips of songs/performances for myspace/youtube/etc, so it need not be an expensive model. Just something that I can get an ok recording with without the distortion sound. Thanks:) |

Actually them little flip cameras capture ok. Here is one of our singers that recorded himself. However it didn't pick up the lighting on stage correctly, the back lights are not as bright as they appear. He said it cost him about $120 from K-Mart http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJTVtXfi5Ic |

I got one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/Mini-Spy-Camera-Sou ... 4508wt_932 and it did http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lO_zoyXay8 You have to buy memory to use with it but you can record a long time with it. |

Yes. Not the camera either. Was another time I was distracted by "I want this." from a punter. The mix was awful. I actually posted that before as how bad I got it. |

I bought the Flip Ultra about two years ago. I used it only about 3-4 times at the most. I stayed in my laptop bag for a few months. one day it simply would not work. I tried taking the batteries out and putting fresh batteries etc. Nothing. I contacted the company to see if it could be sent in for repair and I got the runaround. I even offered to pay for the camera to be repaired or swapped out, got the runaround. I did a lot off research looking for a small replacement for the Flip video camera and eventually got the Kodak ZX3 Playsport. It's much more rugged than the Flip video cameras and it can even be submerged in water. The sound and video are very good. I paid $129 from amazon and it came with a free 8GB 16GB SD memory card. I've only used it a couple of times. The sound and video are roughly comparable to a standard sized video camera costing up to around $500-$600 and it fits in a shirt pocket easily, it's about the size of a cell phone. It has a screw mount for a tripod on the bottom. |

The Panasonic DMC-ZS7, while not being a camcorder, looks like it takes pretty good HD video and the sound is not bad. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/6 ... gital.html Here's an example from a recent recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HRUay2T ... er&list=UL |

I have a kodak "flip" HD that records in up to 1080. Distance is an issue with these. too close and it's not good. Too far away, not good. Also, if you zoom too close, it goes 'dark' -- not enough light to really discriminate. However, on the flip side (pun, sorry), it has served me well for many things other than in low light and inability to adjust distance to sound source. |

Easy for you to say. You don't have to watch it week after week. |

Thanks for all your tips, and your links.... I have taken note of the advice, I'm going to go over to Fry's and Costco today and check out what they have. I'm trying to browse online and see if they're are any black friday deals on one of the models I'm going to look at. I have a Sony digital camera that does awesome video- IF the sound is not a full band sound. And my Ipod video is the same- great video, but can't handle any form of loud/up close music. |

Just get an external mic kit. DV cameras have awesome sound, 44100 stereo. Problem is when the mic is too close to the camera, it picks up noises from the motors and what not moving around inside. |

You mean the ones that take the little black mini DV tapes? (sorry, technologically challenged female here) I have one of those, it was a bother always buying the tapes and transfering it to the pc- I actually gave it to my mom when she went on her trip to Ohio. I want just a digital one, something small that can hide in my purse for when a "moment" happens that I want to capture on video. And those "moments", 9 times out of 10, involve loud music. (: Johnny- thanks for the video, my current camera w/video option would never even pick up that loud of sound, it would be a bunch of distortion. That sounded pretty good. (and i enjoyed your song anyhow) ![]() |
