Post subject:  Thanksgiving Karaoke
Just wondering how many folks are hosting on Thanksgiving night. My venue left it up to us, and after discussing it with a lot of people who said they'd LOVE to come out and sing after spending the day with family, we decided to go for it. Anyone else?

My karaoke is @ a family restaurant. We had karaoke last year, my boss said not this year. He said we didn't make good money last time because people were too full to order dinner they were just ordering sodas. He doesn't even want karaoke this Friday because people are tired to come out and just want to stay home & eat thanksgiving food leftovers.

I finally convince him to have it this Friday as a show of appreciation & gratitude to our karaoke customers.

Anyway, it's probably not good for restaurant venues like ours. I think business will be good for bars/clubs.

It's been my general experience (from the Singer side of things) that Karaoke has been a bust on Thanksgiving. Most people are too tired out after their Family gatherings and eating Turkey to want to go out singing.

Christmas eve is the only other dead night for Karaoke, BUT, that's only until about 12:30 AM... Once Midnight Mass is over, all the SINNERS come out to the Bars (and it's jam-packed).

Our club used to not have it T-Giving night. About 12 years ago after a big family gathering we all went to the club thinking it was going to be dead and asked if we could fire it up for the family & friends we had, they ok'd it, throughout the night people were coming in like normal and we let them sing too, by the end of the night I had over 25 singers. They started having it every year after that, it's usually a pretty good turnout because most other clubs either are closed or don't have anything going so they come to us 8)

We are open Christmas Eve too (going on 5 years now), surprisingly busy that night as well (I pay a host handsomely for that one)! Many people that do not have family nor kids (even some that do) that like to go out after all the hustle & bustle.

We did it one year. People did come out, but the numbers paled in comparison to a regular Karaoke night.

I've never done karaoke on Thanksgiving.

I won't work on xmas eve or xmas day either. And this year they land on a Friday/Saturday. I already talked to the bar owner about it. He understands. My family does not live close and family holidays are very important to me.

Here in our area, it's all family oriented. So most of the bars will be dead as can be on Thanksgiving. Most will be open for the few who do not have families to go home to, but these people are generally not karaoke punters either. Christmas however, most bars/clubs will be closed, only a very few will be open. Same thing tho, no karaoke. My regular Thursday show this week, I still don't know if I am supposed to be there. I told the bartender i wasn't going to be there, and she passed it on to the owner. He told her he had already called me and left a voice mail, but I wonder who he called, because it sure wasn't me!!! And I don't have his number either. So, I will just call up there to the bar tomorrow and ask my bartender friend how busy it is and just play it by ear.

I will be quite busy, Actully I will be starting at 8:00PM instead of my normal 9:30PM. We are always packed and expect a early and active crowd. People will arrive ready to party. Bar owner is paying me time and 1/2 for holiday pay. at 15% of sales we should ring $3000 to $4000 I will be very happy with a $150 to $200 bonus for working the holiday.

Thanksgiving karaoke has been actually quite busy for us in the past. There might be a few factors specific to our location however.

First of all I run a late night show, (10-2) and for most people that is after (sometimes stresfull) normal hour relatives have left (or people have returned from their relatives who also keep more normal night hours).

Secondly I am in a College town and a lot of people live too far from relatives to travel so they are alone for this holliday, and need an outlet.

Thirdly, we are one of only a few bars in town that actually is advertising that they will be open and have some sort of planned entertainment. On a normal Thursday we have about 10 shows advertised (bands, DJs or Karaoke) that compete with us in Athens Ga, on Thanksgiving it is down to 1. Other bars may be open but without entertainment.

I don't expect the most busy night of the year in terms of crowd size (compared to other Thursdays) but it will probably be in the top 25%. Not only that but in terms of energy, since most people can sleep in the next day it will be a more wild night and many regulars will drink more than normal.

We aren't working today but we got to experience our first pre-Thanksgiving mob last night as been talked about on here in previous years. Yes, it was busy.

We had a guy in from Tacoma who's relatives dropped him off and parked him for the evening. We asked--he has been to the Thunderbird a few times but always when a female was hosting. It is a long drive for him or he would go more often. Small world.

He must have been there on the weekends. I only work Mon-Thur. Do you remember his name?

He went by Mike K. He sang "Voo Doo," "Always On My Mind," "Trashy Women" and "Right On." He doesn't make it out to the Thunderbird often but he has been given the mission to transport one of our business cards to you so he may turn up again some day.

35 different signgers/groups, (about 40 different individuals singing if you split duets). About a similar number of non singers. Not the most busy thursday nite of the year but probably in the top 10 (a 3.5 hour show 10:30-2). Sales far beyond average as many people drank a lot. Only one singer did not stay for the average 2 hour wait to sing, after signing up. 25 signups in the first 30 minutes.

The PNW got hit with a horrendous weather system this week which ruined a lot of opportunities for people to get out. It doesn't help that the weather forecasters on television wear the mask of doom and tell everyone to stay home. So that definitely had an impact on everyone's bottom lines this week. I was expecting a mob scene on Wednesday night that didn't happen. T'giving night started out scary quiet but not long after start time we got busy and the place came to life.

Yes, there are a lot of people who don't have families but those weren't the people who showed up last night. It was groups of people who decided, after being homebound for a couple of days, to get out and sing a little, laugh a little, and drink a little. All in all a very nice crowd and a perfect way to end the holiday. (Many actually were hanging out until a few of the early opening stores around opened ... went straight from karaoke to shopping...ugggg)
