Went to my Thursday gig last night and as usual I go around and chat with everyone before the show. I come to a table where there is a couple I have never seen before. I detect an accent and find out they are visiting from Adelaide, Australia! Lovely couple, pretty serious singers - they tell me they go out and sing three nights a week. I announced their presence just before I started the show, the whole room full of people applauds and cheers them on - they stayed for 2 rotations and excused themselves, came up and profusely thanked me for such a great evening. Not only am I pleased that they had such a great time, but so pleased that the singers who frequent my show are such a great group of people and showed them such courtesy and enthusiasm.

Good story and very nice job by you.

It reminded me of something that happened during our recent vacation to Florida. We went out to a karaoke bar and the MC brought up a guy who was visiting from Colombia. He had a prominent accent and I sort of wondered what he might sing. Well... he just about blew the roof off of that place with his version of La Bamba. Richie Valens never did it any better than this guy did. It was awesome and easily the best performance of the night.

Great fun!

You didn't happen to get their details did you?

We will be moving to Adelaide in the next few weeks from Sydney,Australia and I would love to know where people go to sing over there!

I have asked this question on another Australian forum, but haven't had any responses just yet :(

I am moving first and then bringing my wife and baby up in a few months. Trying to figure out ways to pass the nights alone. Karaoke sounds like a good solution.

So what songs did they sing? Standards? Oldies? Newbies? Australian artists?

No Vic, I wish I had had more time and could have gotten more details. They were a very nice couple for sure. She sang a couple of Shania songs and did an excellent job. Off hand I can't remember what he sang (too many shows since then), but they were both very accomlished singers. They did ask me if I had any Australian artists specifically and my mind went absolutely blank. DUH! I told them to be sure and come back and visit me if/when they return for another vacation.

It's probably just as well. It's a dumb song and they'd probably tell you to go jump in a billabong if you suggested it.

If I had to have 7 songs for the Aussies to sing they would be

Working Class Man - Jimmy Barnes
Physical - Olivia newton John
Ke Sahn - Cold Chisel
You're the voice - John Farnham
Eagle Rock - Daddy Cool
Am I ever gonna see your face again - the Angels

some AC/DC for the drunker blokes.

Cheers!

PS: Sunfly Down Under (SFDU) Series Has a few of the more popular Aussie Tracks

hahahahaha- I honestly thought that's what they would sing when I first moved to Australia from overseas - I have never heard any of these sung at a show here in my 4 years in business.

I was disappointed that they don't even do Down Under!

Crazy Aussies :)

Keith Urban? Who's that? jk

Anything even distantly resembling country music is shirked by most city dwellers and the 'hip' crowd, whether this is by choice or by peer pressure I don't know.

Lets face it - we all love to claim the stars as our own, even if they only have a holiday home in Australia that they visit once a year. Same goes for Ms. Kidman Urban. I'm not sure too many of us could even name a Keith Urban song.

There are pubs and clubs dedicated to country music, but this is generally a much older crowd and the cowboy cowgirl sort of scene.

I was very surprised to find a huge part of my Thursday night crowd singing along to bumper music that was recently pulled off the top 20 play lists of the local country station. Tells me I need to pay more attention to getting the odd popular country tune instead of paying so much attention to Bruno Mars, Enrique Iglesias, Katy Perry and Pink.

And last night just for kicks I sang "Stuck Like Glue" and the entire dance floor filled up. Go figure.
