Post subject:  what burner cd+g backing up?
Hi All!
:? I'm a newbie on here so be gentle....!
I have a laptop but the burner does not support the reading/burning of cd+g discs. I previously had a desktop pc which had a plextor burner which was fine. What I need to know is what am I looking for when I look at the spec of the drives? I intend to get an external burner so if it says cd text is that ok or DAO 96....or what?
Any help would be appreciated, incidentally I live in the UK. I would just like to say what a great forum/site this is!

CD TEXT is not for karaoke.

You will need a external cd burner that is CD+G compatible on both READ & WRITE. Just check the specs

Most drives today do not state cdg anywhere in their specs. I have 5 drives from different manus and not one of them state cdg compatible, however the program you use has a big factor in what drives will work. MTU Microstudio or Hoster are excellent in the respect they use most any DVD drive, Powerkaraoke also is good for that as well. CDGRip is supposed to do a great job however i've had more glitches in graphics with this one than the others and it only read from 3 of my 5 drives. Download the demos and give them a shot with any drive you get. LiteOn, Pioneer, HP are 3 names that work for me with Hoster and Microstudio.

If you are using something like CDRWIN from Goldenhawk (used to be the standard at one time) then you need a fully compatible CDG drive. MTU actually sells certified CDG compatible drives if you are in doubt.

:D Thanks to all for replying! Iwill try out one or two programs before I decide on the burner. I didn't realise the program had that much influence on the burning of cd+g files, what i mean is I thought the burner had to be compatiblle before you started! I wish the manufacturers would make life simple and just state in their spec whether it was or not in plain language i.e cd+g

At one time this was the case that the drive had to be cdg compliant, but like stated the newer more powerful programs like from MTU & Powerkaraoke will work with most DVD drives (one LiteOn I bought from a Walmart clearance rack for $10 worked fine). Like I said I have 5 drives that work fine with MTU, but only one of those 5 drives are recognized under Goldenhawk CDGWIN software because it requires a fully cdg compatible drive to read the cdg subcode.

NERO used to have a handy little utility called the "Nero Info Tool" that would tell you all the capabilities of your drive, including CD+G read/write. Used to be free, but I cant find it now on their website. Hmmm.

Just to be clear, and this is a commonly repeated mis-nomer, it's actually not so much a case of the drive being able to support CD+G as it is the drive allowing software to modify specific portions of data that are written to the CD or the software's ability to access the right functions on the drive to control the writing of that data.

The karaoke graphics data is included in an unused portion of the data sub-channel. Every audio CD (CDA) includes information in a "sub-channel" area of the disc that directs the player on how to "play" the CD. 6 bits of every packet are unused and so CDG makes use of those unused bits. In order to write a CDG, the software has to be able to direct the drive how to write the sub-channel data. Many older drives did not allow this. Sometimes the right software could get around it. I believe most drives today allow for it which I believe is why the specific CDG specification has disappeared.
